For someone who has been disillusioned about the world and how things work- the stress of life and the struggles of being human can cause the feelings of christmas cheer a little forceful- fake even. 

You might hate Christmas because everyone appears to be a tad bit nice or at least pretending to be in the name of Christmas which can appear to be hypocritical to you.

This pretence of christmas cheer can cause one to feel absolutely critical about the holidays because of the false promises it brings forth all for it to go away after the holidays are over. 

Pressure to socialise

For introverts, the holidays are perhaps one of the most stressful seasons there is because of the intense pressure to socialise. 

The holidays means there are Christmas parties to go to, office parties, and community gatherings that one is forced to attend and if you don’t- you will be regarded as the person who is bringing down christmas. 

While going for gatherings can be a simple thing, for introverts and people who struggle with social anxiety, this can be a difficult thing to do which can lead one to hate the pressures that comes with the holidays. 

The pressure of gifting

Another reason why you might hate the holiday could be because of the pressures to give gifts and oftentimes you are judged based on what you give to others. 

This can become very toxic very fast and often this toxicity can make you hate christmas because it no longer is a season of giving and loving but rather it becomes a competition that you did not sign up for. 

Lack of money

According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, the lack of money is one of the major stressors during the Christmas season. 

This lack of money can lead people to develop a sense of dread towards the holidays because you are expected to celebrate and to give and to do that you need money. 

When you have no money for the things you want it is easy for one to turn around and say that you don’t want it or that you don’t even like it. The lack of money to celebrate the holidays could be one of the reasons why you hate it. 

Dreaded family gatherings

Now, for most people the major reason why they hate the holidays is the family gatherings and the family expectations to socialise and meet together for a meal when there are underlying conflicts going on. 

This is usually a major issue for people who are more or less estranged by their family or when there are some conflicts between them and their family members which makes them hate the holidays. 

Eating related stress

It is possible that you might hate the holidays because it causes you much anxiety and stress because of all the food that you are surrounded with during christmas; especially if you have an eating disorder. 

You might hate the holidays because you are constantly given food and expected to eat them and the worst part of it is that you are watched and observed whilst you are given food. 

This can cause a lot of stress and anxieties which could be one of the reasons why you hate the holidays- because you become anxious during this time. 

Pressure to drink

Another reason similar to the last one could be because of the expectations to drink, to make merry, to get high, and to party. 

If you are not someone who is all for this, this can become increasingly stressful and this can make you develop an aversion towards the holidays. 

Loneliness

You could hate the holidays because you have no one to celebrate it with and instead of admitting that you are lonely, you rather choose to hate it because hating it allows you the excuse of not being vulnerable with your feelings. 

The fact that your friends and family have someone to celebrate christmas with while all you have is work and your pet could make one uncomfortable with the holidays since the holidays is all about being with loved ones. 

If you are someone who is uncomfortable with admitting that you are lonely, it is possible that you hate the holidays as a defence. 

Personal tragedies

Another reason why you hate the holidays could be because of personal tragedies that occurred in your life that cost you important people you associated the holidays with or because something negative happened during the holidays.

This can become a traumatic experience that you associate with the holidays as a result of which you develop an aversion towards the holidays and everything that represents christmas. 

How to cope and find joy during the holidays

Here are some things that you can do to cope and find happiness during the holidays:

Reach out for support

If you’re having a hard time getting through the holidays for whatever reason, you don’t have to go through it alone. 

You can take a step towards reaching out for support- to your friends and family or even to a professional therapist if that is what you need. 

Therapy can help you figure out what it is that is affecting your life and why you are struggling during the holidays whereas friends and family can be a source of support to one. 

Set boundaries

If the pressures of the holidays are what is causing you so much stress that you are hating every bit of the holidays- you can start setting boundaries between you and the things that you do not want to do. 

This means that you start saying no to things you do not want to do- partying, gifting (yes, you can say no to gifts as well), drinking, etc. 

There is no rule that it is mandatory to be a certain way during the holidays, so start setting boundaries. 

Create new traditions

If the traditions of the holidays are what you hate, create your own holiday traditions. 

For example, if you find the tradition of going for vacations too financially taxing, create a new holiday for yourself and your family that allows you to actually enjoy the holidays rather than be forced to do something you do not want to do. 

Take care of yourself

While it might be hard to take care of yourself during the holidays because of the amount of stress you are under. 

Taking care of your physical needs is very important as it is a way to care for yourself. Taking care of your emotional needs is also important and you can work towards emotional self care after taking care of your physical needs first. 

You can choose to make new changes that help you feel better or healthier like going to the gym, changing your diet to a more healthy one, going for wants. Sometimes change in routines can also be your way of caring for yourself. 

Connect with loved ones

If you can, try spending time with people who give you a sense of joy and meaning- this means that you connect with people you want to be with. 

If you are lonely, let your friends and family know- make plans to hang out and spend time with each other. 

If you do not want to spend time with toxic people, seek support and love elsewhere- you do not have to be with them if you do not want to. 

Remember that holidays are temporary

Remember, the holidays are temporary and it will not last long. 

Even if it is a stressful time of the year, understanding that this lasts only a week or so, puts into perspective how much of an importance it is to your life. 

Ksut because you are miserable for these two weeks does not mean that your life is entirely miserable.
