This article will cover the basics of what the Age of Aquarius is all about and what it means for you from the perspective of your own personal growth, especially with regards to the space you occupy in this world.
What is the Age of Aquarius?
The Age of Aquarius is a time which is supposed to bring increased spirituality and harmony on earth. It is an astrological age, caused by the movement of the earth.
Roughly every 2150 years, the sun’s position at the time of the vernal equinox moves in front of a new zodiac constellation. The Age of Aquarius begins when the March equinox point moves out of the constellation Pisces and into the constellation of Aquarius.
But, there is no clear cut answer to when the sun will be in front of the Aquarius zodiac. Different interpretations give different answers.
The year 2020 brought forward changes around the world that had never been seen before. But, aside from the events that had occurred in everyone’s lives, there was also something rare happening with respect to the planets and astrology.
Jupiter, the planet responsible for luck and fortune Saturn, the planet associated with authority and hierarchy, met during the Great Conjunction on 21st December 2020. This cosmic event, according to astrological predictions, brings about social, political, and ideological changes in the world.
Although Saturn and Jupiter meet every 20 years, this event was significant because the planets were closer together than they have ever been in over 800 years. This also started the cycle of Jupiter and Saturn meeting in the air signs. For the last 200 years, Jupiter and Saturn have only met in earth signs, i.e., Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. But on 21st December 2020, the two planets met in the air sign of Aquarius.
“Aquarius is the sign of teamwork, it’s the sign of society, it’s very progressive and it’s very humanitarian,” says astrologer Jake Register. “During the pandemic people have been living in their own little worlds, and I feel like those walls are going to be coming down soon and people are going to realize that if we want change to happen we can’t go at it alone.”
New York-based astrologer, Aliza Kelly commented, “It signals the Age of Aquarius or as I prefer, the Age of Air. It’s something quite tremendous,” she explains.
When does the Age of Aquarius begin?
Unfortunately, there is no defined date for when this period begins. Astrologers are divided on how to understand this age, because the Age of Aquarius is more an astronomical event than an astrological one. While astronomers define constellations by different sizes, astrologers like to divide the zodiac into twelve equal sections. Thus, it is not possible to equate the astronomical event to astrological implications.
The other problem is that one has to know when the Age of Pisces started to be able to know when the Age of Aquarius begins. Apparently, there’s no firm consensus among astrologers as to when the Age of Pisces began, either. And so, there is no consensus as to when the Age of Aquarius begins.
In The Book of World Horoscopes, Nicholas Campion (director of the Sophia Centre and Course Director of the M.A. in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales, Lampeter) suggests that approximated dates for entering the Age of Aquarius range from 1447 A.D. to 3597 A.D. Campion also reviewed published material on the subject from astrological sources. He said that most writers claim the Age of Aquarius arrived in the 20th century (29 claims). The 24th century is in second place (12 claims).
“I get how people are confusing this with the Age of Aquarius because it is a huge Aquarius energy that we’re entering 2021 with. The actual Age of Aquarius is something different, where the equinox moves into a new zodiac constellation,” says astrologer Alice Bell. “It has more to do with astronomy than astrology.”
Jake Register explains, “No one really knows when astrological ages start and there is no agreed-upon method for how to calculate them. The general consensus among astrologers is that astrological ages are approximately 2000 years long, and we have been in the age of Pisces for about the past two millennia. However, there is no hard cutoff date for when one ends and another begins. I could see why a lot of people say that this is ushering in the Age of Aquarius, but honestly there might not be an official day one, we might just slide gradually into it.”
Aliza Kelly, who believes that the Great Conjunction denotes the beginning of this era said, “It’s more conceptual than you might think. There isn’t any firm agreement on when it starts. What we do know is, generally speaking, this is an age that’s associated with hope and innovation. When it last occurred, in the 19th century, it proved to be a time of revolutions in technology, industry and government. These are all Aquarian traits.”
Some astrologers suggest it starts on the vernal equinox on March 20, 2021 in the northern hemisphere.

What does the Age of Aquarius bring with it?
Regardless of when the Age actually begins, there is no denying that 2021 brought with it strong Aquarian energy. This can be seen in the way community efforts were made to help everyone during the pandemic. There has been greater involvement by everyone towards their own personal growth, with respect to society.
The biggest example is the kind of emphasis people are putting in healing their mental health. We are asking questions about age-old conventions, structures and systems, while trying to lessen the bigotry in our society. Rather than accepting the preset notions, we are critically analyzing and evaluating aspects of life that people earlier would just accept to be the norm.
“For eons the power has rested in traditional, oppressive hierarchical structures, and their beliefs dictated our reality,” says astrologer Adama Sesay. “In the Age of Aquarius, the power is turning over to the individual, and giving the freedom for you to choose your own reality based on what aligns with your soul.”
In its essence, this Age allows for a shift in the human consciousness – from an individualistic approach to an understanding of the oneness of all beings. While the Age of Pisces (the one we are leaving behind) is about money, power and control, the Age of Aquarius is about gaining a humanitarian perspective to the world around us.
Proof of this shift exists in the number of people being drawn to astrology and the spiritual. People’s faith in the Universe and the spiritual world seems to be increasing every single day. A simple Google search will show you how more people are interested in the workings of the Universe today than a few years back.
“Aquarius is all about collective responsibility. We will hopefully be learning how to be part of a larger system, as opposed to just caring about oneself and our immediate family. This is one of the most important lessons that we’ll need to learn if we are to be in a much better situation when we exit this age than we are as we enter it,” says Aliza Kelly, who calls herself an optimistic realist.
She feels the next few years will be a real test of our humanity and potential for growth. “Air is about communication and technology—it’s about working with wind and not what we can take from Earth. It gives us an opportunity to look at our situation from a different vantage point. There will be more space travel, more wind and solar innovation and less dependency on the Earth. We will be required to use our intellect and the cerebral qualities associated with Air to create new ideas and move the framework for what it means to be a human being. This requires a shift in perspective.”
What does Age of Aquarius mean for you?
As mentioned before, this shift is a great time for you to introspect and understand your own place, with respect to your society and surroundings. Aquarius is a mental-energy oriented sign, and thus you can expect this time to force you to deal with the aspects of your life that you have avoided earlier.
Aquarius also happens to be a zodiac of the free-spirited and non-conformist. This implies that you might be drawn to make your own decisions that do not go along the conventional way of life.
This era will bring in a sense of learning and growth based on how we, as individuals, contribute and affect the world around us. It is about looking at the individual as part of a whole – healing the individual self, will ultimately lead to betterment for the environment around you.
“The Age of Pisces shaped many belief systems, but now it’s time to bring our practices into a way of life that keeps us connected, not segregated, to create a foundation that can bring us into a new age,” says transformational astrologer, Corina Crysler.
This covered what you need to understand about the Age of Aquarius and how you can use this astrological shift to your own advantage.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): The Age of Aquarius
How long will the Age of Aquarius last?
The Age of Aquarius, like every other astronomical age, is said to last roughly 2150 years, until we enter the Age of Capricorn.
What happens after the Age of Aquarius?
The Age of Aquarius will be followed by the Age of Capricorn. This age is predicted to bring forth a divide in humanity. While one group will be born with clairvoyant powers, seeking the spiritual and leaning towards faith in a manner stronger than before, there will be another sect of humans, giving into their base desires, and walking so far away from humanity, that they are destined to be doomed.
What was before the Age of Aquarius?
The Age of Aquarius was preceded by the Age of Pisces. It is important to note here that astrologically, the ages proceed in the opposite direction, or what is called retrograde in astronomy. That is why even though in the zodiac system, Pisces comes after Aquarius, with regard to astrological age, the Age of Aquarius follows the Age of Pisces.
Is the Great Conjunction the Age of Aquarius?
There is no one clear answer to when the Age of Aquarius begins. But, the planets Jupiter and Saturn have not met in Aquarius for over hundred of years, which is why astrologers believe that this marks the ushering in of the Age of Aquarius.
Which zodiacs will be affected in the Age of Aquarius?
The signs most affected by this shift will be Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio. If you have these zodiacs in any of the important positions on your birth chart (sun, moon, and rising), you can expect significant changes and upheavals in your life. These changes are not going to be negative, and you will come out a better version of yourself if you choose to embrace these changes rather than fight them.
