Stormzy depression
The rapper Stormzy and his depression: Stormzy depression
We all go through our own mental health struggles. It came as some surprise to some but little surprise to others when the UK rapper Stormzy started discussing his own issues.
It serves as a good inspiration to young kids and teenagers that mental health issues are real issues which we should all address and deal with in the best way possible.
We could deal with our mental health issues by talking to our family, talking to our friends or seeking help from a mental health professional.
There are various ways mental health professionals can help you with your mental health issues.
This could be with online counselling, Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) or other forms of therapy.
People always assume that celebrities, artists and famous people don’t have any issues they deal with and that they are perfect.
By speaking about his depression, stormzy was able to bring the conversation about depression to the public focus and allow people are dealing with depression and don’t have anyone to speak to finally have a voice and get the courage to speak out or reach out to someone.
Sotmzy said about his depression that he felt so low sometimes and wants people to seek help about their depression.
He highlights black men as a particular segment which should seke help abut their depression.
This is true, most black men don’t seek help for mental health services and there is still a taboo with addressing or confronting mental health issues with black men.
By coming out as a black man and speaking about his depression, stormzy will hopefully have alievated some of the fears bkacj men feel and would hopefully have encouraged them to come out and speak about their depression.
Stormzy has spoken about his depression on channel 4 so you know it wasnt a one-off remark and he is very passionate about depression and how much young people should address depression and any other mental health issues disturbing them.
Stormzy has been praised globally for coming out and talking about his depression.
Most people have viewed stormzy’s comments about depression with the BBC as a very courageous thing to do as some people may view it as a bit of a taboo or a “wea” thing to admit.
The track Lay me Bare on his album Gang Signs and Prayer outlines the self-doubt and pain of depression with honesty and vulnerability.
The lyrics like “Like man’a get low sometimes, so low sometimes, Airplane mode on my phone sometimes, Sitting in my house with tears in my face, Can’t answer the door to my bro sometimes” speak to the misery and self-isolation of depression. In the interview, he reflects: “If there’s anyone out there going through that, I think that for them to see that I went through it would help.”
Stormzy is right. Most people will listen to him than take the advice of numerous government agencies such as the NHS when it comes to becoming more aware of depression.
Well done Stormzy for coming out and addressing your depression. We hope more celebrities will do the same.
