Self Efficacy vs Self Confidence

This article will give a brief idea about Self-Efficacy vs. Self-Confidence and then will discuss in detail about Self-efficacy and Self-confidence.

SELF EFFICACY VS SELF CONFIDENCE:

Self-efficacy and Self-confidence are often overlapped with each other.

Self-confidence is a term that refers to the strength of belief whereas self-efficacy refers to the confidence in one’s ability to deal with a situation without being overwhelmed.

SELF-EFFICACY:

When we hear self-efficacy, it is often misunderstood as self-confidence by some people, but it is not the same. According to M. Colman, self-efficacy can be defined as “the capability to attain the required outcome.”

And perceived self-efficacy refers to the faith a person has in his or her aptitude that the desired outcome will be achieved.

Albert Bandura (the founder of observational learning) was born in the year 1925 in Canada but grew up and practiced Psychology in the USA. Bandura published a book entitled Self-efficacy: The Exercise of Control and it was published in the year 1997.

Self-efficacy has different definitions according to different people but the gist is the same, it is a person’s belief in their ability to accomplish some specific goal or task.

It can be said that performance plays an important role in self-efficacy. As some people think that accomplishing a bigger task is more of a challenge and therefore try to work on it and it raises the question, does self-efficacy affect performance?

The word performance is defined as how good or successful a person carries out an activity.

According to M. Colman, the word performance can be understood as the course of administering a series of activities.

Competence is another important factor in self-efficacy. Competence can be situational and it might vary from time to time.

For example, a person might feel competent in academics among classmates but doesn’t feel competent at home with siblings in playing any sport.

Self-efficacy is also related to our sense of self-worth or feeling of the value of ourselves as a human being.

Well, Self-efficacy is also related to confidence, in other words, according to Bandura, “just as with self-esteem and motivation, self-efficacy and can work in a positive correlation”, which means the more confident being is more likely to succeed which ultimately helps in providing experiences to develop one’s self-efficacy.

And the higher self-efficacy gives more confidence in oneself and vice versa.

SELF-CONFIDENCE:

Self-confidence refers to being certain for a chosen course of action, whether it’s the best or not.

Confidence is derived from the Latin word fidere’ which means “to trust”, and therefore self-confidence means having trust in ourselves.

The two things which contribute towards SELF-CONFIDENCE are self-efficacy and self-esteem.

We achieve self-efficacy when we find ourselves having proper skills and achieving goals that are desired.

It is a type of confidence which helps a person in accepting difficult challenges and to hold up the setbacks.

This often overlaps with the idea of self-esteem, which refers to the more general sense that we can cope with what’s wrong happening in our lives and that we have a right to be happy.

According to M. Colman (2002), self-confidence is defined as “a trust in oneself, believing in one’s aptitude, and making a choice”

Some people believe that self-confidence can be built with positive thinking and being certain, which is true but not entirely.

Building competence is as important as other factors in order to build self-confidence. To achieve goals a person has to achieve competence and with the building of competence, self-confidence develops.

If competence has not been achieved then there is only shallow over-confidence rather than self-confidence which is ultimately dangerous for a being as well as brings failure only.

All in all, competence is a must in order to achieve self-efficacy as well as self-confidence.
