Sample resignation letter for a teacher

Sample resignation letters for teachers have to include basically the same information as a regular resignation from any other type of job (employee-employer relationship).

No matter why you are truly resigning, you will need to write a resignation letter letting your employer know you will no longer continue teaching at the school as a school teacher or at a teaching position.

We understand how the field of education and especially teaching job positions are not the easiest no matter if you are a preschool teacher (kindergarten teacher), primary teacher or high school teacher.

There needs to be a lot of love and passion for the profession, and definitely hard work.

So how do you go about notifying your employer? Or you may be thinking, what should the letter include?

When is the best time to hand in my resignation letter?

Well, you may be required to send a resignation letter to the school administration and inform your principal in the process.

Also, you may want to talk to the parents, especially if you have worked for the school for quite some time now.

However, make sure you inform the school first and ask them if they have a specific protocol for contacting parents and letting them know you will no longer work with them.

In addition, and according to Jon from ‘Super Prof’, “Teachers are obliged to give at least half a term’s notice of their intent to leave and they are only permitted to leave at the end of a completed term, i.e they are not allowed to leave a the end of a half-term unless this is agreed mutually by the teacher and the employer.”

So you may also want to consider the particular time of the year when you would like to hand in your resignation letter.

Make sure you read your contract of employment carefully since it may include the notice period (e.g. two weeks notice or 1-month notice) before writing your resignation letter.

What should I include in my resignation letter?

You have defined and analyzed the reasons why you want to resign, and even if they are related to negative experiences with colleagues or the administration of the school, make sure to always keep a positive tone and attitude.

If you have been offered a new job position at another school, make sure to emphasize the positive nature of the change for the school while you still express some enthusiasm for your new job opportunity and what it means for your career.

Since you will probably send the letter to the administration, make sure it is written in a professional, direct and positive manner.

If you don’t feel comfortable providing the specific reasons why you are quitting, you don’t actually have to and can leave it under “personal reasons” or “personal growth”, even though you may be resigning due to a high amount of stress, heavy workload, low pay, lack of respect, etc.

Yes, in your head it might sound like the great opportunity to vent and let them know but refrain from it.

Dear Parents:

Please accept this letter as my regretful resignation from my position as a fourth-grade teacher at Lake Harkin Elementary. In just over a month, I will be taking a few years off to work with the Peace Corps. I have always been very passionate about volunteering, and through the program, my next opportunity will be taking me to Sri Lanka. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching your children, and I look forward to the good I’ll be able to do overseas.

Ms. Michelle Warren will be replacing me as your children’s new teacher. She is a qualified, tenured teacher with an immense amount of elementary education experience, so I have no doubt that she is a perfect fit for the job.

In the coming weeks, the school will send out more information regarding the change and sign-ups for parent-teacher meeting dates so that you will all be able to meet her. I will be introducing her to your children on Wednesday of this week. During this transition, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. My phone number is still my mobile phone, at (555) 555-5555.

I cannot thank you enough for the joy your children have given me this year. Working at LHE has been an incredible experience, and I will always look back on my years here with fond memories. Thank you for the opportunity to teach your children, and I do hope you will stay in touch. I am excited to learn about all the amazing things they will do in the future.
