Are Resignation Letters Required by Law?

A resignation is a voluntary form of termination of employment. For a termination by way of resignation to be legal, it must have been voluntarily tended by the employee. According to the law, you can only resign if you are doing it out of your own volition.

Because of this, it is important to write a formal letter of resignation as it is a tangible record of your intent. These letters are added to your file so even your future employers can access it.

Dear Ms. Harrison,

I would like to inform you I am resigning from my position as a staff attorney for Harrison, Reed and Duncan. This resignation is effective as of March 16, 2021. I have decided to change my current career path away from advertising law and work toward becoming a law professor so I can take my knowledge from here and teach future generations.

I am extremely grateful for the encouragement you have given me as I continue to pursue my personal and professional career goals.

I will take these last two weeks with the company to ensure that all my current cases are complete and help in the transition of assigning cases out to others and providing them with the information they need to continue working on these cases successfully. I also offer my full assistance in training and passing on my current responsibilities to any planned successors.

You can also continue to contact me for any further professional communication at KCamacho@promail.com or at (555) 325-5398.
