The three parts of the decision-making process

In every decision you make, there are three components or parts involved. They are the decision, the desired outcome, and the probability. A decision is initially pursued or confirmed to be acted upon later after sufficient contemplation and evaluation of knowledge and past experiences that we already possess as resources. For instance, you might decide to take up literature as your core subject for pursuing your degree based on your interest, your level of knowledge gained from various sources, and achievements you have been able to gain in the concerned field in your schooling years or other contexts.

The second component in the process of decision making is the desired outcome. The desired outcome refers to the result of the gain you are expecting out of making a particular decision in your life. It could be concerning achieving a long-term goal or it could be something less trivial and spontaneous. In most decisions we make, the process is driven by a motive of understanding, achieving, exploring, or moving away from something which could be a situation, an event, a circumstance, or people.

The next component in the process of decision making is probability. Probability refers to the chances of being able to receive the expected outcomes out of taking a particular decision. Sometimes when you make a decision, it might turn out right and at other times, it could be problematic or could end up making you feel disappointed in the decision you made.

Decisions v/s bad decisions

Any decision we make comes with consequences that can be bad or good. Some decisions we make come along or give us undesirable outcomes and some others give us exactly what we were looking for.  However, we can learn more about ourselves and about the world and other people through the experiences we go through as a result of these decisions.

For instance, some relationships come to an end, some jobs we lose, some people we cannot tolerate, and certain attempts we make that leads to utter failures. In all of these situations, we can take away those lessons that these experiences taught us.

A great decision does not entirely depend upon the outcome or the result. It depends on the process that is involved that must accurately represent the level of knowledge and our true selves in the entire process.

A bad decision is different from just a decision. The difference lies in the fact that when you make a bad decision you do so without thinking about the consequences, contemplating about your resources and other relevant factors.

 The prominence of values

Our value system is of utmost importance. We make most of our important decisions based on our value system. They are what makes a part of us and who we truly are as a human beings.

When we are unhappy with any of our decisions, the reason is mostly that those decisions do not align with our value system. In such situations, we tend to regret our decisions and get frustrated. Ironically, identifying and choosing to live by our values, is one of the most important decisions in our life.

Our values are mostly formed by our childhood experiences, our shared values of our parents and other important family members, friends, and close acquaintances. These factors form the first influences for the formation of our value system. However, as you go forward in life, and grow up, you continue refining and reshaping your value system, influenced by your environment, the kind of people around you and inside your close circle, and the way you choose to perceive the world around you.

Figuring out values

The simplest way to figure out values by honestly identifying what matters the most to you in life. What are the things that truly make you happy and what are those things that do not affect you in any way? These are some questions that you can ask yourself before identifying and deciding on your values. The choices you make and the decisions you live by show your values and their quality. The factor of context also matters when it comes to deciding upon your values.

Character values

Character values are the most important because they are what will be left to cherish in life when you have nothing else left. Character values are those which enhance and embrace your humane sides such as integrity, generosity, kindness, and unconditional love.
