It is also important to ask them to describe their feelings about the task and debrief them about it, ask them what are the thoughts that popped into their mind when they are trying to focus that might be a pain somewhere or feeling cold, tired, hungry or hot, they might realize different feelings while focusing only on the breath or a single thing. 

Discuss those thoughts and feelings with them and tell them that they are not real but sometimes our mind tends to fill up these feelings and thoughts just as a voice of guilt or concern or apprehension.

If you are thinking a specific thought and your mind says that you don’t wanna think about it and you go deeper, it should be not like that rather you should approach that thought as an interesting one and rather than dwelling deep into it try to return your focus to the task at hand.

Tell the students to notice their thoughts and the main aim of this exercise is to watch such thoughts without identifying them much like just looking at them from a distance. If you just jump into one of them, just jump right out and refocus on the object.

The main part of mindfulness activities for the classroom is the start of the classroom, place yourself near the door and greet every student offering them a sincere welcome.

There should be soothing or calming music in the background and taking your moment to start with the mindfulness activity will bring bigger dividends.

For mindfulness activities for the classroom, it is best to not push the students a lot to get out of their comfort zone.

It is not mandatory for them to participate in the activity and they can choose whether they will like to or do not want to participate in it.

They can either participate or just sit idly and gaze out of the window but they should not disturb the ones who are participating in the activity.

Some students might be more comfortable while describing their thought process while others may not so do not take this activity as a source of punishing them.

This activity should leave a positive image in the minds of the student and they should regard it as something that is helpful to them.

Mindfulness activities for the classroom 1.1 The Five-Minute Mini-Meditation 

Relax in your bedroom, in the classroom, or anywhere outside with this five-minute mindfulness exercise.

1. Find a calm spot to lie down, sit, or stand up in whatever position you are comfortable and you will not be disturbed at.

2. Get in a comfortable position for this activity.

3. Rest your hands either on your sides or on your legs.

4. Either focus on a single point in front of you or close your eyes. 

5. Listen with the intent to your breathing as you exhale and inhale air.

6. Try to remain focused on your breathing and not on any thoughts or worries.

7. Inhaling and exhaling the air slowly is considered as one count.

8. Complete at least 10 counts in one go.

9. If in between you lose focus then start the counting again from one.

10. After it, open your eyes if they are closed or shift your focus to another object.

11. Now, notice how you are feeling, and be able to calm yourself a little.

Mindfulness activities for the classroom 1.2 Musical Drawing 

The main aim of this mindfulness activity in a classroom is to let students get experience about the external forces that can influence their pace, mood, and feelings.

For this activity, you will need several songs that have variable tempos or a single song with multiple tempos inside.

1. Make sure that every student is given a pencil and a piece of paper.

2. Ask each kid to draw something, it could be anything they want but the drawing should be continuous and might not stop for the whole activity.

3. Start with soothing, slow music and then change the music to a fast pace one for like about thirty seconds and back to the soothing, relaxing one and back to a fast pace one and back to a peaceful one.

4. Ask each student that with the change in music tempo was there any change in their pace of drawing or did their posture change or did their strokes become slower or faster or any other change that might have happened.

5. Discuss with students the main aim of this activity and what it has to do with mindfulness and how the change in must has affected their body and emotions during this activity.

6. Ask them if they felt how their emotions, feelings, and body is connected.

Mindfulness activities for the classroom 1.3 Blowing Wishes 

This is another great activity to practice one’s focus and start the day on a positive note.

In this mindfulness activity in a classroom, the teacher will lead the whole class through this activity:

Teacher: “Okay everyone, close your eyes and stand up on your positions, think of a person who is really special to you.

It can be one of your family members, friends or anyone who is close to you.

Now once you have imagined that person, think of a really good wish for them that you wanna do. Now think of this wish as a feather, a light feather”

Now ask students to hold their hands out in front of themselves and put a light feather in each of their hands as they pass by.

Teacher: “Now, think about the feather, about its lightness, and how easily it can float. Now imagine that person in your mids and blow your wish that is a feather towards that special person and see that the feather is making its way towards that special person through the clouds and is in their palm. Take a very deep breath and now open your eyes. How did this exercise make you feel? Look at the feathers in your hand, this is also a wish from me so that you can have a wonderful day today.”

Mindfulness activities for the classroom 1.4 Up in the Air 

Discuss with students about the things and thoughts that might fill their minds each and every day.

What responsibilities they might have or what stresses they have in the family or what kind of activities they are usually doing, it can be either from work, family, school, or from other areas.

1. Have students brainstorm their daily routines and take out the things that stress them out in their daily, weekly, or monthly or even future stresses.

2. Ask the students if anyone would volunteer to come to the front. 

3. Take the balloon and write one of the things that are being stressful to the student and write it on the balloon.

4. Toss the balloon in the air and ask the student who has volunteered to keep the balloon in the air with gentle touches and do not let it hit the ground.

5. Now take another blown balloon and write one more thing on that balloon that worries the volunteer and toss it up again asking the volunteer student to do the same with this balloon too.

6. Keep adding more balloons until there are a total of 5 or 6 balloons in the air and the student is struggling to keep them floating.

7. Now explain to the students looking at the experiment that this is how their mind is on a daily basis because of the stressful things they are thinking about.

8. Tell them that their mind needs a break and need to be clear and calm of all of these noises to let the worries, thoughts, and stress fall to the floor.

9. Now look at the student who was volunteering and once he has stopped keeping them up in the air, he has become still and then tell the students because of the worries of your daily life, your mind is almost working in an overloaded state and which does not give you a clear and calm mind for making decisions and your concentration is always divided.

We should practice more mindfulness and let our worries fall to the ground to give a more relaxed environment to our minds.

10. Hold one of the balloons back in your hand and ask the students to focus their minds on that balloon for thirty seconds.

11. Ask them if they were able to focus for the whole time or their thoughts started to wander around in between.

12. Tell the students to write their reflections and things they understood from this experiment in a journal.

How much did they relate to the volunteer while he was trying to keep things up ?

How much time do they take out for themselves to be still?
