Controlling the mind is a recurring theme nowadays, to which many people resort to woe again since they want to regain or initiate control of their own minds. Perhaps because they have had difficulties in the past associated with poor self-control, or because they want to make a change in which they are the protagonist.

What do you think about this? Do you think it is possible to have a person and/or some other alternative that will help you increase the benefit you get from your own mind? There are a lot of myths about this subject, so you may find many resources on the web related to this topic. 

Clearly, not all the resources you will find out there are valuable and/or useful. Given the popularity of this topic, it is very common for content to be created just because it can be easily sold. After all, there are many people out there who are concerned and interested in this topic, and we would all like to have more control over ourselves! 

The first thing we should do is ask ourselves if this is possible in principle. And, above all, to what extent it is possible. How much voluntary control there is, for example, in my thoughts or ideas. How much voluntary control there is in the different manifestations of anxiety. How susceptible we are to change is a question worth taking calmly and patiently.

When it comes to managing your mind, it is common to find many promises and oases in the future – you can achieve anything! And this is true, to a certain extent. Our minds have many features that are tremendously intricate and automated, simply for one reason: the tasks they perform are too complex, and it would not be effective for us to have total control over them. 

This is because our minds are the product of millions of years of evolution, which have shaped and conditioned them in ways we sometimes don’t even imagine. For example, manifestations of anxiety are to some extent uncontrollable because they are part of a basic package of protection we have in order to be protected or “ready” for possible threats. 

Some of us would like to eliminate permanently or almost completely any feelings of anxiety because sometimes it can be very unpleasant and difficult to handle. Some of us, perhaps, if told to manage your mind, thought it would be much better if the feeling of anxiety, worry, and despair disappeared completely. 

Can you imagine a person who doesn’t worry about anything, ever? This is very difficult even to imagine because we know that everyday life has many factors to which we react with expectation and a certain level of anxiety. After all, we need to be prepared! We are not designed for life to take us absolutely by surprise. 

In short, we do have a certain level of possibility of change, there are some aspects of our behavior that can be altered and, of course, used to our advantage. But we cannot alter our whole mind as we please. Manage your mind is also about accepting that which we cannot change and focusing on the additional possibilities we might find in our environment. 

Let’s forget the empty promises

We need to take a disposition towards life, our way of functioning, towards other people and the things that happen to us. We need to have a more open attitude because otherwise, frustration will be the order of the day very easily. Once we have stopped promising ourselves impossible things, we will be able to see life with more realism and we will even begin to enjoy what is already in our hands. 

Emotional regulation: an example of managing your mind 

In the context of the treatment of some mental disorders, we find some tools that have been used to control some aspects of mental functioning. Manage your mind is also about controlling and modulating the emotions we experience. 

Emotional regulation is something that we learn throughout our lives, where the strategies or ways of reacting that we have learned during our early years of development have great relevance. These are important because, appearing so early, they have probably become highly automated responses.

At some point we realize that, for example, when someone makes us feel guilty we usually react in the same way: we try, in whatever way we can, to seek forgiveness or understanding from them. It may also be that we explode with anger and don’t want to talk to this person anymore. That has been our automatic way of reacting to feelings of guilt. 

We may have the initiative to change that way of reacting, but it is extremely difficult. After all, that is what we have learned. Manage your mind, in this case, applies when it comes to knowing ourselves and starting to implement new, more effective strategies in line with our own goals and values. 

Manage your mind: do you know your goals and values? 

Another aspect that becomes relevant when talking about managing your mind, is the knowledge that you have of yourself, specifically of the things that seem most important to us and that we could hardly give up. These are called goals and values. How we want to be perceived by other people, how we want to feel about ourselves based on what we do every day. 

For some people, it will be important to be perceived by others as cheerful and outgoing. This is how they have been for many years and this gives them a feeling of comfort and harmony. “It’s who I am,” they say to themselves. Manage your mind is also to walk in harmony with these goals and values. To take them and integrate them in a conscious way, and not only automatically, in our own lives. 

To know your own goals and desires, it is important that you ask yourself some questions when you have a space of tranquility and privacy. What do I like to do? what are the moments when you experience greater well-being? when I do what I feel happiest? under what situations do unpleasant emotions tend to disappear or diminish? 

These and other questions will help in the work of reading yourself. Manage your mind is also about practicing the ability we have to read ourselves. Manage your mind is to develop a sense of sanity and sincerity about ourselves. We cannot lie to ourselves, even if no one is listening or watching. We are our own judge, a mind that watches itself walk through the world. 

Manage your mind: evaluating the context of life 

It may not sound like an easy task, because sometimes we find it difficult or almost impossible to make any change in our lives. However, manage your mind is also about reading our context. Our daily life is the environment we provide for our minds. The people around us, even if we don’t always realize it, also shape our minds. 

The activities to which we devote our time daily, they also shape our minds. Manage your mind is to develop the ability to do this reading and put ourselves in a different perspective, according to the place we are in and the possibilities that arise from it. 

Manage your mind: thought monitoring 

On the other hand, when we talk about to manage your mind it is common to associate it with the control of our thoughts. Thinking is one of the mental activities that is most transparent to us or that we can appreciate most easily. This is because thinking, by definition, is a conscious activity. 

Thinking is what happens when we want to find an answer, solve a problem, find something that we have lost, try to understand an idea that we have just found in a book, etc. Thinking is a mental activity that we carry out consciously, but that sometimes seems to have become automated. 

It is important to differentiate thought, as previously mentioned, from imagination and memories. Our mind is constantly wandering, almost most of the time, and when it goes from one place to another it usually returns to things that have happened to us in the past or tries to create something new (imagination). 

Memories and imagination sometimes go to the place that we don’t like. Some people may have problems because they are constantly going back to unpleasant events or trying to guess at something negative that is going to happen in the past. This can be very tiring and challenging. 

The above are thought habits that have been acquired throughout life and are susceptible to modification. For example, this person who often remembers negative things would find it very useful to become aware of them, even keep a record, and make an analysis of these things he or she usually remembers. 

On the other hand, and in the context of mindfulness-based strategies, this person could make a non-sensory observation of these memories that often come to mind. Look at their mind as if it were a TV screen, and don’t touch it or try to change the channel. Just observe, and even practice an attitude of compassion about yourself and the things you usually remember. 

Through this non-judgmental observation and monitoring, it is possible that these thought habits begin to change and alter, changing to less distasteful ones. It’s okay to observe our mind, in fact, we enjoy it, but sometimes we need to simply let go of what is present and let the mind wander.
