Kickass Resignation Letter (+4 Samples)

This blog post is a brief guide on how to write a kickass resignation letter. It also contains four varied samples you can refer to.

Writing a Kickass Resignation Letter

Kickass can mean forceful, vigourous, and aggressive. It can also mean extremely good or excellent. Which meaning you pick for the adjective for  your resignation letter depends on what kind of relationship you have with your employers.

If it is a pleasant one, or if you don’t want to burn bridges, it’s best to stick to the latter and have a well-written, complete, and concise resignation letter. But if you don’t mind offending them, you’re free to use sarcasm, frankness, and humour.

Sample 1:

“People of Groupon,

After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you’re wondering why… you haven’t been paying attention. From controversial metrics in our S1 to our material weakness to two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that’s hovering around one-quarter of our listing price, the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO, I am accountable.

You are doing amazing things at Groupon, and you deserve the outside world to give you a second chance. I’m getting in the way of that. A fresh CEO earns you that chance. The board is aligned behind the strategy we’ve shared over the last few months, and I’ve never seen you working together more effectively as a global company – it’s time to give Groupon a relief valve from the public noise.

For those who are concerned about me, please don’t be — I love Groupon, and I’m terribly proud of what we’ve created. I’m OK with having failed at this part of the journey. If Groupon was Battletoads, it would be like I made it all the way to the Terra Tubes without dying on my first ever play-through.

I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to take the company this far with all of you. I’ll now take some time to decompress (FYI I’m looking for a good fat camp to lose my Groupon 40, if anyone has a suggestion), and then maybe I’ll figure out how to channel this experience into something productive.

If there’s one piece of wisdom that this simple pilgrim would like to impart upon you: have the courage to start with the customer. My biggest regrets are the moments that I let a lack of data override my intuition on what’s best for our customers. This leadership change gives you some breathing room to break bad habits and deliver sustainable customer happiness – don’t waste the opportunity!

I will miss you terribly.

Love,

Andrew”

Sample 2:

“Date

Dear (supervisor)

I am sorry that my stepmother died so suddenly from cancer. I am sorry that I am not a robot and was emotionally affected by her passing and had to miss work.

I am sorry that I got sick and had to miss work so that I didn’t get anyone else sick.

I am sorry I work 47.5 hours per week (without getting paid the overtime that I am legally owed) for the last 7 months, and thus have little choice but to schedule necessary doctor’s appointments during school hours.

Clearly, I am a terrible employee and for that, I apologise.

I know you hate people telling you how to do your job, but I suggest you start looking for my replacement. Immediately.”

Sample 3:

“Subject Line: Assignment Resignation

Good Afternoon Name,

I have received an offer for a full-time position and will no longer be able to commit to working on ABC Community creative for the agreed-upon 10 hours per week. My last day will be March 1, 2022.

This comes with a heavy heart as I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you and the team. Working together has been such a great opportunity and a vehicle for personal growth not only within my craft but also within the career world. As I’ve become more intimately familiar with the brand, I feel as if I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time!

In terms of logistics, I am preparing a folder with all of the shapes, illustrations, background patterns, and gradients I’ve made for the brand with the intention of uploading it to the Dropbox folder if you so choose to use them.

I also want to clarify that I will be able to take on the assets for the next two weeks. I want to make this transitional period as smooth as possible for you and the team.

If anything changes or I find that I’m able to take on additional work once I’ve settled in, I will definitely let you know. I hope to keep in touch!

Sincerely,

Your Name”

Sample 4:

“Dear Ms. Houser,

It is with great gladness that I am finally announcing my resignation from ABC Company. Since I have finally gotten an opportunity to accept another job that will get me out of ABC Company, my resignation will be in immediate effect. Thankfully, I will not be coming back into work at all, but will fax over all necessary paperwork. I wish I could say I was sorry for leaving.

It probably does not come as a surprise that I am dissatisfied with my experience working for ABC Company, but I still plan to go through the necessary processes of resignation in order to minimize inconvenience for all parties. If you need to discuss this with me, feel free to leave me a message at (555)-555-5555 or [email] and I will try to get back with you.

Working at ABC Company has been an unfortunate waste of my time and I have never been happier to leave something behind. I just hope that my next job turns out a little better and is more likely to facilitate my reaching a few long-held career goals. Thanks for all of your lack of care and understanding over the years.

Yours,

Finn Johnson (Signature)
