In this brief guide we are going to answer the question ‘’ Is America Chavez gay?’’, Let’s find out the sexuality of this great Marvel heroine, the protagonist of the recent movie: Dr Strange in the multiverse of madness.

Is America Chavez gay?

Yes, America Chavez is a lesbian both in the movie and in the Marvel comics.

One of the criticisms that the Marvel Cinematic Universe often receives is its underrepresentation of LGBTTTIQ+ characters, although that is slowly changing. Consequently, some fans have been excited now that canonically queer characters are slowly being included on the big screen.

A great example of this was seen when actress Xochitl Gomez was cast to bring America Chavez, a canonically queer character in Marvel comics, to life in the sequel to Doctor Strange in October 2020, and it was soon revealed that her role was America Chavez.

Now, thanks to official merchandise from the upcoming Marvel Studios movie, it can be confirmed that America will indeed be a lesbian within the MCU. The t-shirt features the American flag, a Day of the Dead sugar skull patch, an LGBT+ pride flag pin and a phrase that reads “love is love”.

What are her origins?

America Chavez first appeared in 2011 in Vengeance# 1 by Joe Casey, Nick Dragotta and Brad Simpson. Some time later, the character joined the Young Avengers and then headlined her own series in 2017, becoming the first Latin American LGBT+ character to star in a Marvel Comics series. Her abilities include strength, speed and she can create star-shaped portals that allow her to travel between dimensions.

In the comics, she is a proud and open lesbian, and it looks like Doctor Strange 2 will maintain that part of her identity. In recent months, Marvel has made some strides when it comes to LGBT+ representation by confirming that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is bisexual and introducing the first openly gay hero in Eternals with Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry).

Four countries banned “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for featuring a gay character

In some Middle Eastern countries the film was censored and will not be screened. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt banned the screening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness because the film includes an LGBTQ+ character and in these countries homosexuality is illegal, therefore the content is also censored.

The character is America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, who is a lesbian both in the movie and in the Marvel comics.

It is not the first time that a movie of this universe is censored in these countries, previously it happened with Eternals, since it showed the first gay superhero of the company: Phastos, and also included a same-sex couple.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar asked Disney to edit the film in order to screen it, but the house of Mickey Mouse refused.
