I Statement Worksheet- Exploring My Feelings 

“I” statements are the statements that help an individual express his feelings. Thus, “I” statements can also be recognized as “I feel” statements.

The true or real “I” statements use specific emotions to express one’s feelings such as “I feel joyful/ sad/ depressed/ annoyed/ resentful/ lonely/ calm/ fearful” etcetera.

These emotions represent the true feelings of the individual. 

“I” statements or “I” messages reveal an individual’s feelings, perspective, beliefs, values, ideas, opinions and so forth.

The “I” statements begin with the word “I”, indicating that the individual is talking about him specifically. 

“I” statements are used when an individual wants the other person to acknowledge his feelings about a certain event.

Sometimes people might not understand the true feelings or thoughts of an individual about an event, so these statements help the individual explain to others how he is feeling, without blaming others.

I Statement Worksheet- Effective Communication Through I Statements

“I” statements are a very helpful tool for effective communication.

“I” statements are a means of expressing one’s feelings without blaming others, without violating the other person’s rights and without being passive or aggressive.

Some examples of “I” statements include, “When you send messages to me through other people, I feel you do not want to talk to me”, “When you speak loudly with me, I feel you are annoyed with me ”, “I feel sad when I can not talk to you due to your busy schedule” etcetera.

There are three components of “I” statements. The first component is a very short, simple description of unpleasant or undesirable behavior, the second component is an individual’s feelings and the third component is the effect of the other person’s behavior on you.

“I” statements are very useful for communicating effectively, assertively and sincerely with others.

These statements show that the individual using “I” statements is himself responsible for his emotions and feelings.

These statements help the individual express his true self to others by expressing what he feels.

A perspective is a way of viewing a certain thing. Different people have different perspectives on the same thing.

Distinct perspectives do not make an individual a gender minority, unusual or out of the group.

It shows that the individual has a different view of the same thing and it is totally fine. 

Often people find it difficult to express their views to others.

They fear the other people would have a different perspective from them and this would make them feel weird or odd one out.

“I” statements help individuals express their perspectives confidently, assertively and responsibly to others.

For example, if one’s friends are going to watch a romantic movie and asks him to accompany them but one likes action movies and not romantic movies, instead of arguing, one may say to his friends, “Wow, that’s great you are going to watch a romantic movie. I would love to accompany you but I enjoy action movies more.”
