How often does Apple Health update steps?

If you would like to know how often Apple Health updates steps, the answer is that the Health app will update every 10 minutes so the information reflected may not be recorded in real-time. However, it used to do it every minute but Apple decided to change it and increase the time to 10 minutes. For some users, this may be an inconvenience when they are used to seeing their information almost in real-time.

Moreover, some users have reported to experience a delay where steps won’t show up for a considerable amount of time. Let’s see how to add data to the Health app.

The Health app will automatically count your steps, walking and running distances and if you own an Apple Watch, it will automatically track all of your activity data. However, if you are using another app to track your health, you could try adding data from the app to Health so you could find everything in one place. To enter information about your health, here are the steps:

  • Open the Health app and tap the Browse tab.
  • Tap a category, like Activity.
  • Tap a subcategory, like Steps.
  • Tap Add Data in the upper-right corner.
  • Enter the date, time, and data for that activity.
  • When you’re finished, tap Add.

But if you need to add information from other health apps, here are the instructions:

  • Open the Health app.
  • Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
  • Under Privacy, tap Apps. You can see apps that you already own that are compatible with Health. If you don’t see an app, it might not be compatible.
  • Tap an app and turn on the health categories that you want that app to track.
  • You might also need to open the app and adjust its settings to allow it to share data with Health.

How does the Health app work?

The Health app allows you to keep the data organized and this iOS app acts as a centralized hub for all the data retrieved from all the third-party apps and devices, such as food and nutrition diaries, sleep trackers, reproductive health apps, step trackers, etc. just as indicated on

“Health functions in four main categories: activity, mindfulness, sleep and nutrition. Not only can you beef up your data in those four departments, but you can do so much more with the right apps. Once Health is set up the right way, setting and meeting health goals is easier than ever”.

This portion is said to be one of the most useful by many users. If you open the app and go to your activity tile, you can get two subsections of data, which are the daily activity and a snapshot of the entire year.

As you may know, activity is tracked by using the built-in accelerometer in your iPhone to measure things like steps and distances. This means, as long as you keep your phone with you then you can get the most accurate measurements.  However, if you would like to wear a watch, you can get the more detailed information including how often you stand and calories you’ve burned.

Your yearly data will be rounded below the daily information and it includes exercise minutes, resting energy and active energy, among others. You can also retrieve more specific information such as running distance and swimming distance. But if you don’t have an Apple Watch, you can still import data as VO2 and other activity trackers from Fitbit or Garmin.

Where can I find if the app is compatible with the Health app?

If you would like to find if an app is compatible with Health, open the Health app and tap the Browse tab. Next, Tap a category, like Sleep and Tap a subcategory, like Sleep Analysis. Then, scroll down to the apps recommended for that category, then tap an app to learn about and download it.

Go back to your privacy settings in the Health app to allow that app to read or write data in the Health app. You can decide what information appears on the app and which other apps can get your information from Health. Apps that access HealthKit must have a privacy policy so make sure you check the policy before you proceed to grant access to it.

Adding information from your Apple Watch

If you would like to view your goals and your move, exercise and stand data simply open the Health app and tap on the Browse tab. Then tap Activity.

However, if you would like to see your heart rate, open the Health app and tap on the Browse tap> Heart. In contrast, if you would like to see the data from the Breathe app, open your app and tap the browse tab> Mindfulness.

Other Apple Watch apps can also read and write Health data so you can manage them from your Apple Watch by going to your settings> Health and then Apps.

If your Health app is not tracking the step count or other related information, try to open the app, tap on your profile and then tap Devices. Next, Tap your Apple Watch and Tap on Privacy Settings to make sure that Fitness tracking is on.

How does my Health app handle data from other sources?

The Health data can take info from different sources such as the step count recorded from your iPhone and activity from your Apple Watch, organizes it based on where it comes from and prioritizes it in this order (

  • Health data that you enter manually.
  • Data from your iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.
  • Data from apps and Bluetooth devices.

When you add a new data source, it will appear above all the other apps and devices that contribute to the data in Health.
