How does Google Fit track steps?

In this guide, we will talk about How does Google Fit track steps, what can you track or measure with Google Fit, what could be happening if Google Fit is not counting steps, some basic troubleshooting steps you could follow and some additional considerations when using Google Fit to track steps.

How does Google Fit track steps?

You may wonder, how does Google Fit track steps? Well, Google Fit uses a combination or mix of sensors such as the accelerometer, step counter, significant motion counter, etc., and it will depend on the type of device you are using. Checking the steps count is considered very important for some users, not only to track their daily activity but also to know how many calories they have burned.

Google Fit allows you to set goals and Google’s default goal is set to one hour of activity each day, but depending on your fitness level, you can consider it to be too much or not enough. This can be updated if you go click on the Menu button, which is the icon with three vertical dots in the top right corner of the screen, select settings and tap Daily Goals. Here, you have the ability to change the daily activity and daily step goals.

Google has recognized that counting steps is an easy and familiar activity that anyone can perform. For some people, it may even mean the start of their fitness journey to getting more active. Having set goals of a certain number of steps can become motivating and you can even challenge yourself to complete and achieve the number of steps you have added.

What can I track with my Google Fit?

You can track several activities with your Google Fit such as walks, runs, bike rides, among others. Moreover, as discussed, you can track your steps and see for how long you ride your bike for or play soccer.

Here are some activities you can measure:

  • Time
  • Steps
  • Calories
  • Distance. Note: Distance isn’t tracked for stationary biking.
  • Weight. Note: Enter your weight manually to track it.
  • Elevation. Note: Elevation is only tracked for certain outdoor activities.

Why is Google Fit not counting my steps?

Google Fit is considered one of the most useful apps that can help you track your fitness and overall health. But like most apps, it is not perfect and it can present some issues from time to time depending on the circumstances but there is nothing to worry. If your Google Fit is not tracking activities, then it is just one of the many problems you may encounter but here is how you could fix it.

However, one of the first things to try is to reboot your phone first before attempting to take any further steps. You’ll be surprised how effective this could be but if it doesn’t work then keep reading.

One thing you could try as basic troubleshooting steps is to fix your permissions. This is considered as one of the most common causes of problems with step count. When you set up the app for the first time, it usually asks for certain permissions like access to the GPS location, notifications, and so on. If you don’t grant permission, it can create problems with tracking the activities. However, to fix it, just go into the app’s settings and grant all the permissions needed.

Finally, to do this on stock Android 10, go to settings> Apps and notifications> All apps> Google Fit> Permissions> Grant permission. However, if you have an iPhone, it works differently and in order for you to grant permission, go to Settings> Privacy and find the permissions that are missing.

Make sure ‘Track Your Activities’ is Enabled

Well, this might sound obvious to you but most of the time is the reason why your Google Fit is not reflecting the step count or any other activity you might be interested in measuring or tracking. To enable it, go to Google Fit’s settings, you will see an option called ‘Track your Activities’. This option will allow Google Fit to use your device’s sensor to track your steps and distance.

Moreover, here are the steps you can follow:

  • Open Google Fit.
  • Go to Profile at the bottom of the screen and tap on settings, which is the Gear icon at the upper right corner.
  • Toggle ‘Track your activities’ to ON.

While you are doing this, if you are also experiencing issues with the map tracking, make sure that the option ‘Include maps for all activities’ and the GPS are also enabled.

Why is Google Fit not syncing?

You may have noticed there is different data on your tracking app when compared to the data on Google Fit and it is more likely to be a syncing issue. If you would like to fix this syncing problem, make sure that the third-party app and/or device are connected and synced properly. However, the step by step will depend on the type of device or the specific app.

If you have MiFit and you would like to sync it with Google Fit, you need to make sure that MiFit is connected to your device and head over to Profile. Tap on Add accounts and select Google Fit. Then, you can log-in to your account and everything should be ready.

However, sometimes it only syncs everything recorded after the first sync and not before that time. Moreover, even after a successful synchronization, it can take some time before you see the updated data so try to be a bit patient with it.

What happens if Google Fit is not tracking distance correctly?

Besides walking and tracking your step count, you may also enjoy running or cycling and if the distance covered while doing any of these activities, then it is probably not a problem with your Google Fit but with your GPS signal.

“GPS signal strength and stability can greatly differ depending on your phone, location, tall buildings, satellite location, and even the weather. So, there’s not much you can do about it in this case (myhealthyapple.com)”. If it ends up being a problem with the GPS make sure there are no problems with the signal, data or your cellphone provider.

Why is this blog about How does Google Fit track steps important?

As we have discussed on how Google Fit track steps, it is not the app we have to account for the magic behind step count but the sensors on the devices you use for the step count. Of course, there is also an algorithm and other data analysis that allows the number of steps to show up on the screen. Moreover, we have seen that sometimes it is possible that the information about the steps may not be reflected or there could be an extra step waiting to be completed.

Finally, step count can be a very easy and familiar activity that anyone at any age can perform and still be considered as a fun way to stay fit or start your fitness journey.
