How does Google Fit track sleep?

You may wonder how Google Fit tracks sleep and we will try to find out. Just as many of the other apps that track sleep available in the Market have made Google think about adding a new sleep tracking feature to the Google Fit app. The app will allow you to track your sleep pattern by using the shared data from linked apps. This means it uses data from other apps and compatible devices.

Besides adding the sleep tracking feature, Google has also added a new Dark Mode to the app just like it has done with other apps. Moreover, for some users like me, it is very important to have the option to track my sleep, see how many hours I have slept and even the quality of my sleep. Subsequently, just as indicated on timesofindia.com:

“The app now showcases a sleep chart showing the starting time and wake up time along with heart rate, weight, and step count under the ‘Home’ tab. Tapping on it shows the complete details based on weeks, months and years, while users can check bedtime routine and duration of sleep at the bottom of the page”. This means the app is not only functional to track sleep but also some other features the users can benefit from.

How important is it to track sleep habits?

I have always wondered what happens when we go to sleep. How many times I move during the night, for how long, how many times did I wake up, etc., and sometimes I even wonder why after sleeping some many hours I still feel tired. Since I track my sleep habits I am more aware and in control of my sleep habits. For instance, I have noticed that I need to go to bed before 10:00 p.m, otherwise I wake up feeling tired and spend the whole day all moody and cranky.

In my quest to find a solution for my sleeping problem, I started to check the options available. However, as we have discussed the Google Fit app not only tracks your sleep but it does so much more in terms of helping improve your health and fitness habits. But we all know our overall sleep quality is related to our health. One of the biggest names in sleep tracking has to be Sleep as Android, which records and lets you see the data like never before.

How to Download Sleep as Android?

Up until this part, you may be totally convinced that sleep tracking is something you must do. But first, you will need to download the ‘Sleep as Android’ app from the Play Store. This app is where the data is pulled from and gets transferred to the Google Fit app once you set everything up. Needless to say, the app is totally free and it is very easy to use.

Now, if you don’t have the Google Fit app yet, you will need to install it. This is the app that will work as a central hub to organize the data stored about all your fitness information for you to access it more easily.

How can I set up my Sleep as Android app?

After having downloaded both apps, open the Sleep as Android app and scroll through the welcome screen to get familiar with the features. You may also skip and jump straight to the homepage so you can get started right away. Once you are on the main screen, you’ll get asked to set up an alarm for your wakeup time.

Simply hit the flashing ‘Set alarm’ button that appears on top and select an ideal time for you to wake up in the morning. Now, go to the search bar at the top and search for ‘Google Fit’. After this, tap the entry under ‘Services’, tap Google Fit and then tap Allow to grant permission. Now, you can select the Google account you would like to use with the Google Fit app.

However, you can also review which permissions the Sleep as Android app will obtain from your account but after it, tap allow to accept the connection between apps. Now, just hit the ‘Upload to Cloud’ button to begin syncing the information from your Sleep as Android data with your Google Fit account. From this point forward, when you record the sleep data, it will automatically sync with Google Fit.

Start tracking your sleep

Up until this point, it seems pretty easy, right? Now that both apps are linked, you are ready to start using the sleep tracker. The Sleep as Android app has quite a lot of features you may calmly want to look at. It may seem overwhelming at first but you don’t have to try them all at once.

When going to bed, open your Sleep as Android app and make sure your alarm settings are correct and hit the ‘Start-Sleep Tracking’ button. Leave your mobile next to you so you can pick up movement or sounds and record your sleep as accurately as possible.

Finally, as soon as you wake up in the morning, you have to swipe from the ‘Stop and Save’ section at the bottom and hit the red button to end the session. Once you have completed the session, you can see the graph with the information, rate the quality of your sleep and even add comments.

How can I view my sleep data using Google Fit?

As indicated on android.gadgethacks.com, “The data you just recorded will also now sync with your Google Fit account, so you can open the Fit app to the main screen and check out the “Sleep” section. Alternatively, if you hit the “Journal” tab, you can get a quick overview of your sleep data entries for easy access”.

Moreover, if you would like to view your sleep data quickly, you can use Google Fit but perhaps it will show you more details than the ones you are able to see in Sleep as Android, so it might get confusing at times, just while you get used to reading the information displayed.
