When I heard the word ‘Body Battery’ I was very curious about what it meant and how a watch could measure your energy levels. It is really a unique concept among wearable devices. According to Garmin Support, the higher the number is the more energy the user should have to complete tasks and activities. A lower number may indicate it is time to rest to conserve energy.

Let’s think about this as when we have our phones charged up to 100%. The more we use it, the battery will start to drain as it is supposed to. However, we know there are some activities that we perform with our phones that will use most of the battery. The same happens to our bodies when we perform certain activities, however, this doesn’t mean that not doing anything will not impact our energy levels since there are activities that happen internally without us even knowing but still use our energy.

Measuring Body Battery is important because it allows you to analyze how your body reacts to certain situations and stimuli. For instance, if our body battery is showing a low number in the morning, we can analyze what has happened in the last couple of hours to identify what may have been the cause of such low numbers. But, should our Body Battery always be high? Well, not necessarily. Our body battery is usually at its highest upon waking up for obvious reasons and only if we had a restful night’s sleep. However, as the day goes by and if we have vigorous activities throughout the day it will drain the battery faster.

However, there should be a similar level of each at the end of the day, indicating a balance between activity and recovery. 

But, how do I recharge my Body Battery? You may wonder. If you wear your watch when you go to bed at night and you get a good night’s sleep, it will be one of the best things to recharge and recover. Moreover, try to avoid things that could affect your sleep such as eating too much before going to sleep or having a cup of coffee, alcohol or exercising too close to your bedtime.

Instead, try to eat healthily and exercise regularly but early in the morning or afternoon. However, eating healthy won’t always impact Body Battery directly the same as energy shots or having caffeine to boost your levels.  

How does Body Battery interact with stress and activities?

There are certain activities, habits (some not as healthy as they should be) and even stressful situations that could affect our Body Battery. 

For instance, we could feel overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, sad because we have been having issues at work or problems with colleagues. Moreover, if we consume alcohol/stimulants, exceed physically when exercising, etc., it could also affect our body battery. 

Finally, if we have been sick, in pain, dehydrated or exhausted it will also take a toll over our body battery as it is expected.

However, after wearing your device continuously for a full day, the values should correlate closely to what your Body Battery should be.
