How does Apple health know when I sleep

You may wonder ‘How does Apple Health know when I sleep’. Some devices recognize when there is a certain period of time of inactivity, that you may be sleeping. However, some others need to be manually configured to start tracking your sleep.

If you have an Apple Watch, you can create a personalized sleep schedule to help you improve the sleep quality and your overall health. To set up ‘Sleep’  open the Health app on your iPhone, tap on ‘Get Started’ under the ‘Set Up Sleep’ section and then tap Next. Follow the prompts on the screen and it will let you establish the following:

  • Sleep Goals: this option refers to the number of hours you would like to spend sleeping.
  • Bedtime and Wake Up Times: this option allows you to set when you would like to go to bed and wake up.
  • Sleep Mode: when you are about to go to sleep, you can turn on Do Not Disturb and dim the Lock Screen to limit distractions.
  • Wind Down Shortcuts: with this option you can add shortcuts that will help you take some time to relax before going to bed, such as turning on a Home scene, listening to your playlist or use your preferred meditation app.
  • Track Sleep with Apple Watch: you can wear your watch to bed to track your sleep. However, this option is available during the initial set up if you have paired your device with your iPhone beforehand. 

Adjusting Sleep goals

You can adjust your sleep goals as needed on your phone or Apple Watch. Here are the instructions on how to do it if you are configuring the info on your iPhone:

  • Open the Health app and tap Sleep.
  • Tap Full Schedule & Options.
  • Tap Sleep Goal under Additional Details.
  • Adjust your Sleep Goal then tap the time you’ve selected to save your changes.

However, if you would like to adjust your sleep goals on your Apple Watch, here is how:

  • Open the Sleep app and tap Full Schedule.
  • Tap Sleep Goal under Options.
  • Tap the Plus and Minus buttons to adjust your goal.
  • Tap Sleep Goal in the upper left to go back and save your changes.

Edit your sleep schedule (On iPhone)

You can always edit or update your sleep schedule when you see fit and you can make adjustments to your full schedule or for Next Wake Up Only. With the Next Wake Up Only, the changes will apply only to the following day. However, changes to your full schedule apply to all future days. 

If you need to make changes to ‘Next Wake Up Only’, here is how:

  • Open the Health app, tap Browse at bottom of the screen, then tap Sleep. If you have Sleep favourite, you can access it from the Summary page in the Health app.
  • Tap Edit under the sleep schedule in Next.
  • Drag the curved slider to set Bedtime and Wake Up times. The slider turns orange if the schedule does not meet your sleep goal.
  • Tap Wake Up Alarm to turn on the alarm and adjust your alarm sound, volume, and haptics.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.

However, if you need to update your full schedule, here is how:

  • Open the Health app and tap Sleep.
  • Tap a schedule in Full Schedule & Options.
  • Tap Edit under the schedule you would like to update.
  • Tap the Days Active and drag the curved slider to set Bedtime and Wake Up times. The slider turns orange if the schedule does not meet your sleep goal.
  • Tap Wake Up Alarm to turn on an alarm and adjust your alarm sound, volume, and haptics.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.

Use Bedtime to track your sleep

Using ‘Bedtime’ is also a great option to track your sleep on your iPhone. Here you can set the amount of time you want to sleep each night and the Clock app will remind you to go to bed. Additionally, you can configure the alarm to wake you up. If you would like to set a bedtime for the first time, the Clock app will ask you a few questions to personalize the settings:

  • Open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab.
  • Tap Get Started and choose your settings.
  • Tap Done.

After setting up your Bedtime, your iPhone reminds you when it is time for you to go to bed and the alarm will sound when it is time to wake up. However, if you would like to turn it off, follow these steps:

  •  Open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab.
  • Under Schedule, tap Bedtime or Wake Up.
  • In the top-right corner, turn the Bedtime Schedule on or off.
  • This turns off both the bedtime reminder and the wake-up alarm.  

Changing the time and days you get a reminder/alarm

If you would like to configure the time and days you get a reminder or the alarm, follow these instructions:

  • Open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab.
  • Under Schedule, tap Bedtime or Wake up.
  • Drag the Bedtime button or the Alarm button to the alarm icon. As you drag, your Bedtime reminder and Wake Up alarm automatically update.
  • Under Days Of Week Active, tap the days that you want to get reminders or alarms. Days that are orange are active.

How can I track my sleep?

If you would like to track your sleep and get your sleep history, after using it for a while, open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab. Scroll down to your Analysis, which will show your recent history. However, if you use your iPhone during the times you have set as ‘bedtime’ you won’t get credit for that time. Or, if you snooze the wake alarm. The time that you stay in bed updates to match. Additionally, the data from bedtime will automatically appear in the Health app.

Changing the settings

  • Choose a Wake Up Sound for your alarm.
