So let’s start with the basic definitions of mindset, growth mindset, and grit growth mindset.

What is a Mindset and Growth Mindset?

Mindset is defined as the belief of an individual about his capabilities.

A fixed mindset is referred to as and individuals believe that his abilities are inborn.

On its contrary, a growth mindset is referred to as the belief that an individual’s talents can be shaped up.

Definition of Grit

Grit refers to the ability of an individual to show perseverance after misfortunes or difficulties.

Grit is referred to as the mindset that there is no need to cry over spilled milk because the individual is due to his inborn traits, which cannot be changed.

In contrast, the individuals with the growth mindset are resilient and have more grit.

Oxford Dictionaries define grit as “courage and resolve: strength of character”.

According to Duckworth, there are five characteristics that define grit.

These five characteristics are courage, conscientiousness, long term goals and endurance, resilience, and excellence versus perfection.

Duckworth believed that these five characteristics are present in the individuals having grit.

Characteristics of Grit

The five characteristics of grit are explained below.

According to Duckworth, these characteristics can be used to identify whether an individual has grit or not.

Courage

Courage is referred to as the ability of an individual to overcome his fear then he is facing new challenges.

It is the tendency of an individual to stay determined even if the challenge gets harder and even if he fails again and again.

Individuals having grit do not fear from accepting new challenges.

They stick to the challenge and try until they succeed.

Conscientiousness

Conscientiousness is the characteristic that drives an individual to his goal. It allows the individual to rely on things do achieve his goals.

Achievement-oriented people are how to have self-control.

Such people do not hesitate for depending upon things for achieving their goals.

Long-Term Goals and Endurance

Long term goals and endurance help individuals to think about their goals in the long term stay patient to achieve their goals at the right time.

Individuals having this characteristic can see their goals in the long run, do effective goals setting, and finally achieve their goals.

Resilience

Resilience is referred to as the ability of an individual to bounce back from distressing emotions and traumatic events.

This ability help individuals to confront the unpleasant realities bravely and move on in their lives.

Confidence in self and positive mindset help individuals stay resilient.

It helps individuals to stay persistent even if they fail again and again, until the time when they finally succeed.

Excellence vs. Perfection

There is a little difference between excellence and perfection. Perfection is unattainable.

On the other hand, excellence is referred to as the ability of an individual to perform his best.

The people having grit, always aim for excellence rather than perfection. They put on all effort in the process of their goal achievement.

As a result of this effort, they accomplish their goals successfully in the most effective and best way.

Why are Grit and Resilience Important to the Growth Mindset?

Grit and resilience are very important for the growth mindset.

Grit and resilience help individuals to develop and maintain a positive and healthy growth mindset.

Duckworth might not agree with this because she stated in her TEDTalk in 2013 that in her view great is built up by a growth mindset.

It might be possible that both of the statements are true.

Some people are already born with a little grit in them while some might need encouragement to face the challenges of life.

Let’s take the example of small kids who just begin to walk. Some kids will fall but rise again without the support of others.

On the other hand, some kids will fall and seek encouragement to help them rise again.

Hence it is possible that people are born with a tendency for a fixed or growth mindset.

The people who are born with a fixed mindset will not exhibit grit, because they would believe their abilities are inborn and there is no need to improve.

Anyhow, Duckworth’s research is still going on and so is the search for the importance of grit and resilience for growth mindset.
