Extraverted Sensing (A Comprehensive Guide)

The model or classification proposed by Myers-Briggs divides the personality types into four Perceiving functions and four Judging functions.

These perceiving functions are further divided into two intuition functions and two sensing functions, with the sensing functions, are known as introverted sensing and extroverted sensing.

Introverted sensing is the one which is directed inwardly whereas extroverted sensing is directed towards the outside or outwardly.

The personality types in which extraverted sensing serves as one of the dominant functions are ESFP and ESTP, whereas the ones in which introverted sensing is more dominant are ISFJ and ISTJ types.

In this article, we will discuss extraverted sensing.

Extraverted Sensing (Se) vs Introverted Sensing (Si)

Extraverted sensing is more focused on outward things and occurs through the five senses of a person i.e. sound, sight, smell, touch, and taste.

Extraverted sensing is also sometimes referred to as the Extraverted Sensation.

Whereas Introverted Sensing depends on the sensations in the inner body, i.e. hunger, thirst, pain, numbness, internal temperature, muscle tensions, tingling, etc.

Both these sensing capabilities are crucial and important for the physical survival of a person and also a fundamental part in delivering vital sensing feedback for the brain from within and without.

At first, it does seem a little strange that most people will display strong introverted or extroverted sensing but it is not different from any of the other differences in an individual.

There had been times in our past or history where being an extrovert was more beneficial to us in surviving a situation or the times where they were very important to some project or to the working environment or in the social community and group.

As a species, having both introverted and extraverted and sensing has improved our odds of survival in this world by giving us more information by monitoring and receiving both types of sensory data.

Extraverted types are likely more suited for tasks involving outdoor activities like hunting because they have a better ability to notice and respond to a situation and important details in the environment, whereas introverted people may be better suited for distinguishing between whether some food is poisoned or not because of their higher inner sensitivity.

Both Introverted and Extroverted sensing plays an important role in the basic psychological perception and meditation but this is not the only purpose of these two sensing functions.

Speaking at a breeder note or on a wider picture Extroverted sensing can also be used to understand the concrete events that are happening around us in nature or otherwise.

This is not limited to taking complete notice of sensory details such as smell, sights, and movements but it also includes the things which are the general styles, fashion, and trends around us.

Whereas all of the personality types rely on eyesight or vision for daily functioning, Extraverted Sensing types are especially attuned to the vision and the visual input, this is one of the reasons for their concern about their style and appearance in front of others than the introverted types.

They are not only after the physical beauty but also the sensory novelty and perceive both types of beauty in the environment around them.

Because of their penchant for sensory novelty, extraverted sensing people are usually described as hedonists or thrill-seekers and are more engaged in physical actions than other personality types.

They love physical activities and like to perceive and respond to environmental cues, that is one of the main reasons that most of them are chefs, mechanics, athletes, and more professions like this.

Whereas on the other hand Introverted Sensing is more focused on the inner sensations of the person and can be easily overlooked if not taken into account seriously, it is also associated with preserving the past and remembering the previous ways of doing things.

All of the experiences and knowledge gained in the past can be condensed into a specific view related to the past.

Introverted Sensing types are mostly the ones that cherish the things which are used in routine life or they are most familiar within their life, also taking into account a quantitative factor which might result in the more a certain thing has been done or a certain action has been performed the more preferable it is to do that action or the more important that thing has become to that person.

The phrase “it will grow on me” might have come from an introverted sensing person as he might have noticed the changes in taste with repeated exposure to the same thing.

In most of the cases, if you let an introverted person to keep trying on activity either they will become tolerant towards it or will end up enjoying it whereas in contrast for extroverted sensing types who are not mostly attached to their past experiences are more open to like something at the first attempt.

They will like to explore the environment around them more using their senses and vision and will love to explore newer stuff.

They are not attached to the past and will not have past experiences obstruct any new adventures and new beginnings.

Extraverted sensing also allows us to take in the sensation at its fullest and enjoy the feeling and thrill of the unknown.

The sensory feeling of touch and smell gives us a first-hand experience of the things to come and we might get to know of different new and exciting things like new forms of smells or taste better foods or feel the freshness of pure air in forest and take in the beautiful scenery of the mountains or see the calm waves of the sea.

What Is Extraverted Sensing?

Extraverted sensing as a whole is to use our senses to perceive incoming information of the real world that is already present everywhere around us.

In extraverted sensing, the main focus of the sensory information is on the objective, physical world around us and helps us to experience it first hand fully.

People with extraverted sensing are highly in-tune with their senses and with the environment and world around them and are especially energized when they come in contact with other people, objects, and different new thrilling situations in their environment.

They are full of energy and are open to any adventure any time around and are the most sociable.
