The current article will be answering if Lucifer has BPD. Additionally, we will be checking out some of the signs of psychological issues that Lucifer seems to depict in the series ‘Lucifer.’ Finally, we will be describing some causal factors which could have led to these.

Does Lucifer have BPD?

No, Lucifer does not have BPD. In the series ‘Lucifer’, the titular character does not show the main characteristic signs and symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. He, however, seems to struggle with a variety of mental health issues.

Lucifer Morningstar is an Archangel who is banished from Heaven as a result of his rebellion. When he comes to Earth in 2011, Lucifer decides to abdicate his throne as the ruler of hell and set up a nightclub among humans.

Many fans and critics of the show have shown eagerness to pin a mental health diagnosis on Lucifer after seeing his actions and behaviors in the series. At the same time, his actual mental health status and diagnosis have never been discussed openly in the series.

It is mostly assumed by fans and critics that Lucifer might actually have Narcissistic Personality Disorder as a result of his self-obsession and high levels of narcissism. However, some critics have disputed that since Lucifer is a celestial being, he cannot have a mental illness.

Lucifer’s psychological issues

In the series ‘Lucifer’, the titular character Lucifer Morningstar is banished to Earth after rebelling against his Father. While it is not confirmed in the series, many fans and critics assume that Lucifer might be struggling with some psychological issues.

While a proper diagnosis for Lucifer has never been given, it is often assumed that Lucifer might actually have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Some signs and symptoms of psychological issues that Lucifer shows in the series have been discussed in the following section.

He is very charming for a the wrong reasons

Lucifer Morningstar might be the Prince of Hell, but on Earth is very suave and such a charming character. Women are simply unable to resist him and throw themselves at him all the time. Lucifer thrives on this.

He is charming in a deadly manner and uses his attractiveness and his smooth talking for his own selfish needs and desires. Just as his title goes as the Prince of Darkness, Lucifer only needs to satisfy his animal needs and urges, like his sexual appetite and thirst for money.

He does not have many stable relationships

Lucifer definitely does not have many stable relationships in his life. Even his relationship with his own family is in tatters all the time. After he starts his nightclub, his social life and romantic life seem to be very shallow and temporary in nature.

This includes his romantic relationships mainly where he truly shows his narcissism. Lucifer goes from woman to woman, only becoming obsessed or enthralled with those women who somehow avoid his temptations. His most stable relationship seems to be with Chloe.

Even in his relationship with Chloe, Lucifer does not have a strong foundation, and likes her since she thwarts his advances many of the time. Towards the end of the series, Lucifer gets to be with Chloe for eternity as they rule Hell together.

He only has selfish reasons

In everything that he does, Lucifer Morningstar seems to have only selfish reasons in mind. He only keeps his own desires and needs at the top of the list. This includes the instances where Lucifer seemingly acts very caring and compassionate towards others.

All the careers and professions that Lucifer takes part in are for the sole purpose of satisfying his carnal needs and some selfish ambition. He does not have an ounce of care and true compassion for others, even those who are very close to him.

He feels he is right all the time

Lucifer also feels that he is right all the time and does not feel that he is capable for doing anything wrong. He has a major superiority complex as he is the ruler of Hell, even though he has been banished from Heaven after hosting a rebellion after his father.

Despite meeting many characters who are definitely a lot smarter and more knowledgeable than him, Lucifer still feels that he is the most intelligent person on Earth. He also feels that his morals and principles are much better and stronger since he is a celestial being.

He is truly obsessed with himself

Lucifer is truly obsessed with himself. And this can be seen in many instances throughout the series. For example, whenever he has a conversation with someone, he tries his best to steer the topic back to himself.

Another instance where Lucifer can be seen showing his obsession with himself is when he gets caught up in the selfie-craze and starts taking selfies of himself. Lucifer’s self-obsession shows no bounds and he constantly proves this, while being completely aware about it.

He needs to control others

Another sign that Lucifer truly may have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder is that he has this toxic need to control others and their actions. He feels the need to control even the women in his life and cannot accept it when people take their decisions on their own.

When Lucifer started seeing a therapist, many fans and critics of the show felt that he was on the path to redemption. But, even in this instance, he goes to the therapist just to understand why another woman may be immune to his advances and does not like him.

While this is his original reason for going to therapy, he somehow stays in the sessions in order to learn more about himself. This actually goes on to make Lucifer more aware about his actions and why he acts the way he does.

His dress-sense is flashy

One more important sign of Lucifer’s narcissism is his dress-sense. He is not seen without high-end brands on his clothes and constantly has the need to be flashy and very attractive. Even if his actions and words do not work when tempting women, his dress-sense does the trick for him.

This flashiness is not just limited to his clothes, but even his lifestyle. He drives beautiful cars, wears flashy watches and does not limit his spending just to get the attention of others and turn their focus to him.

Causes of Lucifer’s psychological issues

Lucifer has a number of psychological issues, most of which are in line with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, as depicted in the series ‘Lucifer.’ There are a number of causal factors and contributing factors at play here, some of which are explained as follows.

  • His obsession with power: Lucifer was formerly one of the archangels in Heaven, meant to serve God, his Father. However, his power was not enough for him, leading him to rebel against God. Even after being banished, he still showed an obsession with power.
  • His natural charm: After being banished to Earth, Lucifer clearly understood that he has some natural charm and abilities that attract humans to him. This type of behavior further reinforced his narcissism and his self-obsession.

Lucifer clearly understood that the bad actions that got him banished from Heaven, were pretty popular on Earth and actually worked on humans very well. Therefore, the punishment given to him only reinforced his behavior, and added to his narcissism.
