Does anyone in Euphoria have BPD? (+7 Other issues)

This interesting article will be discussing if anyone in Euphoria has BPD or Borderline Personality Disorder. We will also be discussing the other different mental health disorders and mental health issues which have been depicted in the drama series, Euphoria.

Does anyone in Euphoria have BPD?

Yes, Rue in Euphoria has BPD. One of the main characters of the series, Rue Bennett has been diagnosed with a number of mental health disorders, including Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety and even Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Apart from these mental health disorders, Rue also portrays a number of signs of Borderline Personality Disorder. In the drama series, Euphoria, Rue Bennett is not the only person who struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder. The other characters that have BPD are:

  • Cassie: Cassie’s Borderline Personality Disorder is definitely not confirmed by the creators of the drama series. However, based on her various actions and behaviors throughout her story arc, this diagnosis can be confirmed.

In the series Cassie can be seen showing a very high far of abandonment, which is basically the most characteristic sign of Borderline Personality Disorder. She also goes through definite mood shifts and swings which further fuel this theory of BPD.

In one incident, when she is in the hot-tub with the other characters, she can even be seen dissociating. Dissociation is also commonly seen in Borderline Personality Disorder, particularly as a reaction to high levels of stress.

Cassie also shows a distorted self-image, which leads her to often act differently from her beliefs and morals. For example, she dates her best-friend’s ex-boyfriend and actually tries her best to justify her actions and bring meaning to the whole picture.

Self-harming tendencies can also be seen in Cassie, especially in the scene where her mother and sister hide all the sharp objects from her. This act seems to be futile, since she can then be seen hurting herself with a corkscrew.

  • Jules: Jules is another character in the Euphoria series that is said to have Borderline Personality Disorder. She portrays almost all the main signs and symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder.

Jules is a transgender teen who had the privilege of transitioning at a very young age. However, she still goes through a lot of emotional trauma, particularly from her past and also due to her poor self-esteem.

In the Euphoria series, Jules can be seen participating in violent and aggressive sex with many men. Impulsive and reckless behaviors like this are actually pretty characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder.

However, Jules does not realize the actual weight of her actions. She feels that her hyper-sexuality and her tendency to be drawn towards cis-white men are actually a result of her need to explore her femininity and her sexuality.

In another impulsive act, Jules immediately skips town to go meet an old friend. She even takes drugs with this friend, even though she promises Rue that she will stay away from substances. This again signifies Jules’ difficulty in controlling her impulses.

At the same time, Jules does not show many other signs of Borderline Personality Disorder, such as dissociation. Therefore, many fans who have watched the show and followed the character closely disagree with this diagnosis.

Mental illness in Euphoria

Euphoria as a drama series was seriously appreciated by viewers and even by mental health experts all around the world for its accurate and overt portrayal of several mental health disorders and mental health issues.

While some of the diagnoses of mental illness in Euphoria have been confirmed by the creators and mentioned openly, such as in the case of Rue, many other cases have not been confirmed and have led to arm-chair diagnosis. The other mental illnesses in Euphoria are listed below.

Rue’s Bipolar Disorder

Rue Bennett from the Euphoria series, has been diagnosed with a variety of mental health disorders, including Bipolar Disorder, BPD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and even ADHD. Among these, her Bipolar disorder is best covered in the series.

Rue can be clearly seen to go through the many highs and slows which are characteristic of bipolar disorder. In one painful episode, Rue can be seen struggling with kidney pain after being unable to get up to go to the bathroom as a result of her depressive episode.

Nate’s C-PTSD

Nate is one of the most popular male characters in the Euphoria series. He is an arrogant person who does not hesitate to hurt and abuse others for his own needs and desires. Nate’s situation can be seen to be Complex-PTSD.

His parents were definitely negligent, and his father, Cal, is a molester who targets minors. As a result of this, Nate was exposed to sexual violence very early on. He easily mirrors these qualities, all the while struggling with psychotic nightmares and painful flashbacks.

Cassie’s Histrionic Personality Disorder

While many fans assume that Cassie might be actually struggling from Borderline Personality Disorder, some people assume that she actually might have Histrionic Personality Disorder. This is because she is desperate for other men to notice her and swings in her self-image.

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is also extensively covered in Euphoria, particularly in relation to Rue Bennett. Rue starts abusing substances as a child when she seeks her father struggling with his cancer. She continues to abuse substances throughout the series, even overdosing once.

Substance abuse is also applied to many other characters, while not that intense as Rue Bennett. For example, Jules can be seen consuming drugs when she skips town to meet an old friend. The other characters regularly drink alcohol and consume drugs, all which are obtained illegally.

Jules’ gender dysphoria

Jules can also be struggling to accept her body after she transitioned. Jules is definitely quite privileged to transition at a very early age. However, she still hates many parts of her body, and tries to find security by sexual relationships with cis-white men.

Abusive relationships

Abusive relationships are also covered in Euphoria. Abusive relationships can actually point to many mental health issues in both the victim as well as the abuser. The main abusive relationship which is covered in the Euphoria series is between Nate and Maddy.

Even though Maddy is a very strong and independent character, she still loves her boyfriend Nate, even though he physically and emotionally abuses her. Nate has his own issues with his troubled past which have led to a disturbed and toxic personality.

However, it is painful to see Maddy continuously allow him to overpower her and use her. Nate even controls what Maddy should wear and whom she should and should speak to. When she disobeys, he slams her into a wall. Despite this, they both still continue this toxic relationship.

Kat’s Body Dysmorphia

Kat’s story arc in Euphoria is pretty interesting and even empowering in many instances. Kat struggles to love her body as she does not match the measurements as the many other popular female characters in the show.

Body dysmorphia is real, especially among those who are overweight. Kat actually overcomes her body dysmorphia by wearing beautifully fashioned outfits without giving a hoot as to what other people around her are saying.

While her fashion sense seemed to mask her insecurities, Kat still struggled with these throughout the series and even experienced a lot of bullying. She admits that she hates her body and herself, even though as a plus-size woman she is not allowed by society to do so.
