  • Great Services: We will touch upon this in later sections of the article but it needs to be mentioned that they provide multiple mediums through which clients can interact with their personal service providers to meet their own needs and ensure their comfort.
  • A Platform: Betterhelp is actually a platform that allows service providers and clients to connect so that skills and resources can be exchanged to ensure the improvement of the mental health of clients. It takes a lot of resources to create a safe, secure, robust and efficient platform that caters to multiple audiences from across the globe.
  • Unlimited Sessions: They realize the needs of their clients and hence provide unlimited sessions for a fixed amount only.
  • Value: Apart from unlimited sessions and access to 24/7 chat rooms that allow you to reach out to your counselor at any time, they also engage clients through digital worksheets to ensure their clients do not feel left alone or unguided even outside sessions.

After going through some of the reasons why you must pay for Betterhelp apart from the fact that bringing services to people requires money, we will take a look at what Betterhelp basically is and what their services are!

What Is Betterhelp?

Betterhelp is one of the largest online platforms that provides multiple services for all types of people who are suffering from mental health problems and require counseling. What is great about this service is that it is online hence it is available anywhere and every time. You do not have to go to the doctor’s office to get an appointment or wait in line for your turn. This is great if you feel pretty down and getting out of bed is a challenge for you!

With approximately 1700 licensed therapists available online at the click of a button, Betterhelp ensures that its clients receive the best help they can get by connecting them to professional therapists and counselors who know what they need to do This is apparent by the total number of sessions which Betterhelp has already conducted from their platform; a whopping 70 million sessions already completed! This is possible because the company understands the needs of clients well and hence provides therapy related services to them online and not just at  physical location. In a world where things are changing constantly and the unknown is always around the corner, it is becoming more of a need rather than a desire to get services online and at your doorstep – we simply don’t have time nowadays!

It is an affordable mental health online platform that costs around $35 to $90 depending on the subscription package you choose. Their payment model is hence opposed to the traditional pay per session model where clients need to pay for every session they take; hence being financially stressed out if they suffer from severe mental health issues.

  • Financial Aid: This is an option Betterhelp provides to individuals who are not in a position to avail mental health services due to financial limitations. This financial aid can reduce your counseling fees from $280 to as low as $216 but applies to people based on their financial status and income.

Another interesting question clients have is whether Betterhelp accepts insurance and is it eligible for schemes like FSA! We will take a look at these questions in the next section of the article.

Side Note: I have tried and tested various products and services to help with my anxiety and depression. See my top recommendations here, as well as a full list of all products and services our team has tested for various mental health conditions and general wellness.

Does Betterhelp Accept Insurance?

Betterhelp does not accept insurance nor are its services covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

There are a number of reasons for this which have been highlighted on their website but we will mention a few.

Firstly, Betterhelp claims that it’s services are very low cost and clients can afford to avail them without insurance. In fact, the online mental health platform claims that compared to the total co-pays an individual may have to pay for when getting insurance, the service costs of Betterhelp are actually less!

Secondly, Betterhelp is an online therapy platform where there are some restrictions. Service providers are strongly discouraged from diagnosing patients for a number of reasons and they are also not allowed to advise on drug usage although they can help clients manage their drugs. Keeping this in mind, it sometimes becomes difficult to avail insurance.

Can You Pay Through FSA For Services At Betterhelp?

FSA stands for a flexible spending account that aims to assist people in covering medical expenses such as doctor’s visits, paying for medicines and getting health related items such as bandages. This fund is available for people who must register through their employer and will gain access to a certain amount of money that they can spend within a certain time. In the case they do not spend all of the money, they can extend the time to spend it or carry it over to the next year!

Although this is somewhat of a grey, it is likely that services at Betterhelp will not qualify for FSA funds because they do not  explicitly involve those things which FSA covers such as:

  • Medical expenses such as co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles
  • Dental expenses such as check-ups, exams, X – Rays and braces
  • Eye related services such as vision check-up, glasses, laser eye surgery and contact lenses
  • Professional services which include physical therapy, chiropractor and acupuncture
  • Expenses to buy necessary drugs that have been prescribed as well as over the counter drugs too
  • Health care items for daily use such as bandages, pregnancy kits and blood pressure monitors.

Yes Betterhelp caters to mental health issues but due to some limitations such as not being able to allow service providers to prescribe drugs or diagnose clients, the battle to gain FSA funds for online therapy may be somewhat of a struggle.
