Do Kalms contain antihistamine?

In this guide, we will discuss ‘Do Kalms contain antihistamine’, who should not use antihistamines, Kalms night ingredients, what are Kalms tablets, types of Kalms, and additional considerations when using Kalms.

Do Kalms contain antihistamine?

Kalms doesn’t seem to contain antihistamines and the reason being is that this herbal medicine is based on Valerian root, which possesses sedative and anxiolytic properties.

According to Ismail, (2012) “Valerian is thought to work by binding to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type I receptors to improve responses to the neurotransmitter GABA.”

However, the efficacy and properties of valerian as a sleeping aid hasn’t been established entirely.

It seems to improve sleep by reducing the time someone takes to fall asleep but just from a subjective point of view.

On the other hand, antihistamines (diphenhydramine) are widely known for the treatment of allergies and due to their sedating effect, it has been used as an over the counter medication of mild insomnia.

However, it is not recommended to take antihistamines as a long-term treatment for insomnia since in the short term, the body is able to develop tolerance to their effect.

Moreover, valerian has been found fairly safe with minimal side effects but antihistamine’s effect is said to carry over into the next morning and can include several side effects (Ismail, 2012).

One of the most famous sleeping aids that contain diphenhydramine is Nytol, but do not mistake it with Nytol Herbal tablets which actually are antihistamine-free.
