DnD personality traits (a complete guide)

In this blog post, we will be discussing the DnD personality traits (dungeons and dragons), their nature, the different types of personality traits, and their importance. We will also be answering some frequently asked questions about dungeons and dragons’ ideals and character traits, at the end of this blog post.

DnD personality traits

In dungeons and dragons, personality traits refer to the various aspects a particular character might like or dislike, his/her past accomplishments,  a character’s fears, morals, and values; pervasive attitude and mannerisms; and sometimes, the influence of his/her ability score.

Some of the kinds of personality traits are as follows:

  • Abrasiveness
  • Absent-mindedness
  • Cautious
  • Dishonesty
  • Distinctive
  • easy-going

Uniqueness

Personality traits are simple and unique aspects that set apart one character from another. A personality trait of a character must not be generalizable to a group of characters. They must be able to convey something fun and interesting about a character and must be self-descriptive. They should be able to show you how one character stands out from the rest of them.

For instance, “I’m brave”, cannot be considered to be an apt personality trait as it does not indicate any specificities. On the other hand, those personality traits that indicate specific dispositions about your character’s interests and strengths are the best ones to be considered.

Determining factor

One of the most crucial determining factors of personality traits is your highest and lowest ability scores in the game. These scores reveal a  lot about your character strengths and weaknesses. The key is to be able to relate and define one trait to another. These scores give you a clear depiction of what trait combinations will suit your character the best and why so.

The real magic

The one really amazing aspect of dungeons and dragons is the fact that you can create a whole new character as per your requirements and needs, to pursue an adventure. Many players usually create characters with personality traits that describe the idealized version of themselves. These characters also include various bonds, ideals, and other characteristics.

Players use different types of traits and mannerisms to create their desired character. It depends on what you are looking for in your character and how you perceive and go about adventures.

Importance of DnD personality traits

Personality traits exert an impact on the game and in the rendition of performance by the characters. The character’s trait can have a huge impact, moderate impact, or sometimes, no impact at all. A trait may come across as negative or positive, depending upon how you choose to perceive the trait. For instance, let us consider the trait of trustworthiness. In certain campaigns, the trait will be extremely useful and helpful to others involved in the game.

However, at other times, your trust could backfire and cause problems for you. This happens when you trust everyone blindly, without thinking wisely and eventually someone ends up betraying you.

Another good example is the trait of leadership. If you possess good leadership qualities, it will help you to lead your team confidently and get things done then and there. However, at other times, the same trait could be mistaken for arrogance and dominance by others, which then leads to war and destruction of diplomacy.

Types of traits

In dungeons and dragons, everything is customizable. You have the choice of creating your own house rules, unique traits, habits, beliefs, characters, and likes and dislikes. Below given is a brief list of the different types of traits that exists in the game and their descriptions.

Distinctive

The trait distinctive refers to a type f physical trait that sets you apart from the others in the game. The distinctive trait could be in the form of a big ear, a scar, or anything that makes you different from others. The biggest disadvantage of this trait is the inability you will face when you want your character to hide or disguise themselves. All being said, the trait gives the character a certain reputation.

Easy-going

This trait refers to being friendly and laid-back about most things. If you are an easy-going person, people will find it easy to talk to you and be friends with you. On the other hand, you might find it difficult to stand up for yourself and you may have a problem facing and dealing with arguments.

Focused

This trait helps you to keep your focus on your goals and to deal with any kind of distraction efficiently. It helps you pay attention to the bigger picture and to remain stable. However, too much focus could lead to missing out on opportunities and important details.

Hardy

People who possess this trait consider themselves to be strong and also tend to harshly judge others who are not so. Another problem here is that these people also tend to overestimate their strength and mostly end up getting hurt as a result.

Inattentive

Inattentiveness refers to the inability to pay unwavering attention to any task at hand. If you possess this trait, you will find it difficult to pay attention to the completion of bigger tasks or to provide a good finishing to them. O the other hand, inattentive people find it relatively easy to deal with smaller tasks.

Polite

People who possess this trait try to be as well-mannered and soft-spoken as possible and are always careful not to hurt other people’s feelings. Some people are genuinely polite while some others could be using their politeness to gain something out of others.

Relentless

Someone who is relentless does not give up to a great extent. They persist even during the toughest of times and try to see things from different perspectives. People who are relentless exhaust themselves after a point and this can lead to fatigue as well.

Suspicious

Suspicious characters are skeptical of everyone they meet and sometimes even the people they love. This will lead them to look out for people who are trying to do them wrong and betray them. The main problem faced by such people is the inability to trust and most people refrain from approaching such people.
