Postcard Activity

As a result, the postcard exercise can be a useful self-discovery tool for answering the question, “What might I communicate to someone if we were not face to face?”

Print a postcard, or just use a postcard template to make your own. One side should be totally blank for sketching, while the other side can be lined for writing.

Invite participants to think of a circumstance or person about whom they are annoyed, angry, disturbed, or sad. Take a few moments just reflecting about and meditating on what occurred, how it feels, and what they’d like to say to the individual about how the event affected them.

Ask participants to sketch or make a visual depiction as to how they felt or presently feel about the situation on the blank side of their postcard. Emphasize that they have complete creative freedom and can make anything they want with just about any materials.

Create A Safe Place

Safe Place is an exercise that can be done for people of all ages, but it could be a sensitive activity for children and young people who have little to no power over their surroundings and fail to feel secure in their environment and homes in particular.

This activity may assist a child or adolescent in reflecting on methods to find a secure space, or it may just assist them in feeling in control of their surroundings. This can be performed in small groups or one-on-one.

Ask participants to imagine a place where they feel protected. Then have them consider what it was about this specific area that helps them feel this way. Is it light and breezy, or darker and soothing? If they appear oblivious, ask them lots of questions, but focus on what they believe will help them feel protected.

After that, ask everyone to take a contemplative minute. Ask them to shut their eyes and concentrate on their breaths. Then think about their safe space, whether it’s actual or imaginary, and picture what it looks like. What is it like to be in their safe haven? What feelings are they able to detect?

Once everyone is at ease, have them examine the different materials and reconstruct their safe space. When they’ve completed and are ready, invite them to showcase their creation in the group, outlining the various aspects of their safe zone. 

These could be used to start a conversation about safe places and how they can be created in the real world.

Mask Making Activity

Making or designing a mask in art therapy might lead to us examining different elements of our personalities. We can sometimes put on a mask to hide feelings which are difficult to communicate. Give your child a pre-made mask or let them create one out of paper and let them decorate it anyway they want.
