Can you work in counseling without a degree?
It is possible to find work in counselling sectors without having a psychology or a counselling degree. In this blog, we will look at the various options that mental health, wellbeing, psychology and counselling have to offer. The field of psychology is ever evolving and therefore, there’s a place for everyone who wishes to be a part of it.
Some amazing options include:
- Social and Human Service
- Substance use Counselor
- Peer Counselor
- Psychiatric Assistant
- Career Counselor
- Developmental Specialist
- Assisting Teachers
People may opt not to pursue a career as a therapist because the educational and licensing requirements for such an occupation may seem too difficult. However, there are careers in the counseling field that do not require one to become licensed or even earn a degree: social workers and pastoral counselors both provide counseling without having any formalized training.
Furthermore, some careers whose primary purpose does not appear to be part of the counseling industry can include “counseling” in their job duties – such as teachers and certain sales professions such as stockbrokers.
Do you enjoy helping others? Are you a good listener and communicator? Do you look for new ways to improve and expand your professional and personal skills every day? If so, then careers in the mental health field may be a great fit for you. Today we’re going to cover many different options that involve direct work with the general public including the difference between degrees and non-degrees in this field.
Social and Human Service
Human social services support work is a specialized type of job requiring successful applicants to be detail-oriented individuals with strong communication skills. Human social services coordinators are primarily responsible for coordinating services for people that have been declared dependent or incapacitated in some way.
They must work closely with licensed professionals such as occupational therapists, counselors, and psychologists to evaluate the patients’ skills, interests, and needs. In addition to evaluating their patients’ overall functional ability, they also assess their willingness to participate in rehabilitative or other therapeutic activities. Once a treatment plan has been agreed upon by the patient and the relevant professionals, social workers will arrange for caregivers to implement it.

Substance Use Counsellors
Substance abuse counselors focus on the health and rehabilitation of their clients. They help people with behavioral problems by examining their particular thoughts and behaviors to find new ways to think about them that might help them find therapeutic avenues of recovery. In addition, the families of addicts require a specialized approach for helping their child to go through recovery from substance abuse.
To become a substance abuse counselor it’s best if the person has obtained a bachelor’s degree in behavioral disorders and substance abuse counseling, although it helps to have experience working with substance abusers as a way of introducing oneself into a career as a substance abuse counselor.
While some positions as a substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor will require as much as a master’s degree, it is possible to work for some employers with just a high school diploma and, in some cases, certification.
In many organizations there is a tradition of bringing in outside help to advise you when you’re going through a difficult time, and this tradition carries over to the realm of business too. There is a bit of a difference however because business advice tends not to revolve around personal, emotional issues but instead around the general methods one might undertake to ensure success for a company or organization.
Peer counselors can help listeners overcome their problems by sharing their past experiences of having successfully defeated some problems that they once struggled with. A good peer counselor will be someone who has firsthand experience with overcoming or resolving the same issue that they are currently facing. Peer counselors are typically put through rigorous training based on their program. They are given the knowledge and skills they need for their jobs.

Career counselors all know the importance of being a good coach. Providing your career counseling services to others is a great way to tap into a market of motivated individuals who are currently at a crossroads in their lives and need someone they can trust to guide them through this period. Just like a sports team, you have the power to influence the decisions being made by those around you.
Some, but not all, career counselors are master’s level therapists who have been certified in career counseling. However, some of the areas a non-degree career coach is likely to help with are:
- Assists in the creation of a great resume that will catch the employer’s attention. Job coaches work with their customers to create the best CV possible.
- A career counsellor may help you change occupations by assisting you with a comprehensive re-evaluation of professional objectives, abilities, and experience. An expert career coach can also assist you in identifying new industries in which your abilities can readily be used.
- Job coaches will help you practise answering questions and build powerful responses to typical interview questions so that you can demonstrate your abilities and expertise.
- Job coaches may help you improve your negotiating abilities by allowing you to practise them before the interview. Job coaches can help you understand and negotiate wage arrangements in your profession.
Developmental specialists work with children who have special needs and their families. These specialists help to give the child a comfortable place to call home for their developmental pattern of care so there isn’t always a need to rotate homes since transitions tend to be difficult for these kids who aren’t as able physically or cognitively. Developmental specialists should have degrees in special education, psychology, human development, or other similar fields.
Positions as a developmental expert at the entry level are tightly monitored and generally do not require a degree. Those who deal with government or school programmes, on the other hand, may be obliged to earn certification. As a developmental expert, you’ll need a degree and training to provide additional services or operate more autonomously.
People don’t generally consider a job as a teacher’s assistant when they think about the field of mental health. But, much of a teacher’s assistants’ daily responsibilities typically includes working with students either one-on-one or in small groups to help them overcome mental health issues. Students may suffer from multiple disabilities such as learning disabilities and/or other challenges such as physical and/or social impairment. They often help these students with skill-building and coping with the stress of attending school.
Teachers’ assistants serve as an invaluable asset to teachers. They help students succeed in the classroom by working closely with the teacher and guidance counselor to support them academically and/or behaviorally. Their goal is to help kids perform well in a classroom setting.
Counselors use a lot of different tools and methods to help them deal with their patients. In other careers, counseling is not always part of the formal job but might explain why certain jobs utilize these aides and assistants.
Mental health counseling is an ever-expanding field with many different careers. Although most counselor positions do require graduate degrees, you can find work at times that don’t! These careers often allow you to work directly with people on a one-to-one basis to help solve problems. Not all jobs are paid, but they all count as great field experience when looking for how to obtain your license or certification!
