Can Wellbutrin make you tired? (3+ tips that might help)

In this article, we will discuss whether Wellbutrin causes tiredness as a side effect. Can Wellbutrin make you tired?

Wellbutrin (bupropion) does not generally cause tiredness. It is known as one of the energy-boosting antidepressants that can cause anxiety and overexcitation in some people (1,2). However, individuals are different and can respond differently to Wellbutrin. 

Some people may experience tiredness or exhaustion while taking Wellbutrin. Some individuals may also complain of drowsiness, which is one of the listed side effects of this antidepressant (3). In some cases, Wellbutrin-induced high energy levels may be followed by tiredness or exhaustion.

Wellbutrin works on the excitatory systems of your brain, mainly on the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems (2). Although this mechanism of Wellbutrin enhances mood and energy levels, it can cause tiredness or fatigue during the early course of treatment. 

However, people who do experience tiredness on Wellbutrin do start to get better with time as their body adjusts to the medication.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on Wellbutrin-induced tiredness, and most studies have discussed its energy-boosting effects. One study indicated that bupropion, the active ingredient in Wellbutrin, can help alleviate fatigue associated with depression (4). 

It affects the excitatory system of the brain, boosting energy, and motivation, and earning a reputation as one of the best antidepressants for people experiencing depression comorbid with chronic fatigue. 

Another research study suggested that bupropion augmentation in chronic fatigue syndrome could significantly contribute to patients’ recovery, serving as a beneficial add-on treatment (5). 

However, some studies have established an indirect link between Wellbutrin and tiredness. A research review pointed out that insomnia is a well-known side effect of Wellbutrin due to its stimulatory effects (6).

Insomnia or sleep disturbances may trigger tiredness or fatigue the next day, as proper sleep is crucial for both physical and mental health. Inadequate sleep at night can lead to fatigue the following morning, a common reason why some individuals may feel weary on this antidepressant. 

However, research also indicates that such side effects are common during the early phase of treatment and tend to fade away as the body adjusts to the medication.

What factors can affect your energy levels while taking Wellbutrin?

Some factors that can affect your energy levels while taking Wellbutrin include:

Lifestyle factors

Your daily habits, including diet, exercise, and sleep patterns, can significantly impact energy levels. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can contribute to better overall well-being.

Underlying health conditions

Existing health issues may influence how Wellbutrin affects your energy. It’s essential to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider to address potential interactions with other conditions.

Concomitant use of other meds

If you’re taking other medications alongside Wellbutrin, it’s crucial to discuss these with your healthcare provider. Some medications may interact with Wellbutrin or may independently cause tiredness as a side effect.

Nicotine withdrawal

Wellbutrin is also prescribed to help individuals quit smoking due to its impact on neurotransmitters. Nicotine withdrawal itself can influence energy levels during this process.

Stress

High stress levels can impact your energy. If you have a stressful lifestyle, it might affect your energy levels. It’s best to practise stress-releasing activities to help improve your mental and physical well-being.

What to do if Wellbutrin makes you tired?

If Wellbutrin is making you tired or affecting your energy levels, please reach out to your healthcare provider. It is not likely for Wellbutrin to cause tiredness, as it is one of the most commonly used antidepressants for energy and motivation

However, some people may respond differently to medications, especially those that can affect your brain chemistry. It is also important for healthcare providers to rule out any underlying illness that could be silently affecting your energy levels. 

Sometimes, the medication you are currently taking may not have anything to do with your symptoms, so it’s essential to look for other potential factors that could be at play. This helps your doctor adjust your treatment plan accordingly to enhance the overall quality of your life. 

If Wellbutrin, for some reason, is causing severe tiredness, your doctor will either try dose adjustments or switch you to another medication. Do not make any changes to your treatment plan on your own.

Additionally, you can try the following tips to manage your energy levels throughout the day:

  • Ensure you get a good night’s sleep for at least 7-8 hours. It plays a crucial role in maintaining energy levels.
  • A cup of coffee in the morning can provide a quick energy boost, thanks to caffeine. Just don’t overdo it.
  • Engaging in regular physical activity can increase your overall energy levels and improve your mood.
  • Consume a well-balanced diet with a mix of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to provide sustained energy throughout the day.
  • Never skip breakfast; it kickstarts your metabolism and provides the energy needed for the day.

As a pharmacist, I have come across many cases of medication-induced tiredness, but I have always seen people talk about the energy-boosting effects of Wellbutrin. 

However, people can respond differently to medications and sometimes they may have an undiagnosed condition affecting their energy levels. 

This is why I always recommend reaching out to your doctor and discussing helpful ways to mitigate your side effects and to know whether your symptoms are linked to the medication you are currently using. If not, other potential factors should be discussed.
