Genetics  – According to a 2012 study published in PubMed, people with caffeine sensitivity have an amplified reaction to this substance caused by a variation of the ADORA2A gene.

Therefore, people with this genetic variation feel the effects of caffeine much more intensely and over a longer period of time.

Hepatic metabolism – Genetics may also play a role in how the liver metabolizes caffeine. People with caffeine sensitivity produce less of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2.

This enzyme plays a role in how the liver metabolizes caffeine. People with caffeine sensitivity find it harder to process and eliminate caffeine from the body, which makes the effects of caffeine more intense and longer-lasting.
