In addition, brief mini-meditations can be done as needed throughout the day whenever you want to calm your mind and relax your body.”
Therefore, many people question themselves on “When is the best time to meditate?” and when not to. Many people would argue that “the best time to meditate” actually varies from one person to the other, depending pretty much on their schedule and needs.
However, we know now that meditation can help us develop resilience, inner strength and focus, but we often find ourselves struggling on finding the best time for it.
Moreover, according to Mind Works, “the best time to meditate will depend on your lifestyle and what you look to gain from your practice. A regular meditation practice has been shown to lead to an array of health benefits. Meditation helps improve concentration, reduces stress levels, and enhances the quality of sleep, to name but a few. Possible benefits will be in direct proportion to your commitment to sitting. That’s why it’s important to find a time that works for your way of life.”
Is there really “the best time” to meditate?
As we have discussed, probably the best time depends on the time we have available throughout the day.
We are so consumed by our hectic lives that finding the “best time” is nearly impossible.
However, let’s think about specific moments of our day and reflect on them, finding our most suitable time of the day.
Sonia Jones from Live Sonima interviewed Deepak Chopra, and here are some thoughts on the matter.
Chopra indicates that “the best time is of course when you wake up in the morning. There’s a reason for that, and that is you had a good night’s rest and your body feels fresh so it’s the best time for your mind to feel fresh and get in touch with the deeper part of your being. Having said that, the best time is also what is convenient for you so you know you’ve taken the kids to school and you’re back now before start watching TV or doing something else or call your friend on the phone, or you can meditate late in the afternoon.”
In addition, for people who can’t find and dedicate a specific time of the day to meditate Chopra says “once in a while just stop and ask yourself, ‘am I aware?’”.
This is intended to bring you to the present moment, to the “here and now” and this could be accompanied by another question, “What am I aware of?”.
This helps you to become aware of everything around you but avoid putting into words such as “I’m aware of a statue” or “I’m aware of that person” or “I’m aware of this music”.
What if I meditate in the morning?
Many understand the importance of meditating first thing in the morning since your mind seems fresh and quiet.
People who tend to meditate during this time of the day seem to have “a calm and productive tone before the day’s activities and distractions”.
In addition, it makes sense that when we wake up we are not thinking too much or worrying too much about all the things we need to do throughout our day.
If we decide to do a short meditation practice as soon as we wake up then we can actually make it a habit that can help us prepare for our day using a different perspective.
Meditation doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do x amount of time, but just simply focusing on your breathing and being aware of it could be enough, specially if you have started meditating.
What if I meditate after work?
If you tend to stress yourself too much during the time you spend at work then, meditating right after work could help you de-stress.
You may have a job that is very demanding physically and/or mentally so meditation can help you relieve the stress and tension that has been building up during your workday.
In addition, it has been suggested that choosing this time of the day to do your daily meditation can create a helpful and set a clear boundary between your work life and your personal life.
This will also help you make some room for other important things in your life that are actually being occupied by your work schedule or stress, such as spending time with your family or having just some time for yourself and leisure activities or hobbies.
What if I meditate during my lunch hour?
If you can’t meditate during the morning because you have many things going on at that time then, perhaps you can spare some time from your lunch hour to meditate.
This time of the day (in the middle of your workday) could be a much-needed break to de-stress or just take your mind off work for a bit, especially if you just had a stressful staff meeting or an argument with a colleague.
Remember, you don’t have to dedicate the entire hour to meditate, just a couple of minutes will have a powerful effect.
What if I randomly pick the time to meditate?
If you have a very demanding job or probably have so many things to take care during the day, setting up a fixed time to meditate can be quite challenging.
However, we all have certain moments of the day that just fills us with anxiety and stress. When this happens, take a few minutes to stop, focus on your body and breathing.
This type of mindfulness meditation where we become aware of what is going on in our minds and bodies can help us develop skills to cope with stressful situations in a more effective way.
What if I meditate before going to bed?
As mentioned by Mind Works, “there’s no real consensus about whether choosing evenings as your regular meditation hour is suitable or not. For some people, this is the time they can really unwind: the day’s work is done, the kids are asleep, the dog’s been walked, and things are generally quieter. If you enjoy evening meditation and are able to remain alert, aware, and focused, this may be the right time for you.”
However, if you are expecting to use meditation as a sedative then perhaps this won’t be a good time of the day.
Mindfulness is about being “mindful” and aware, so you can’t actually do this if you’re dropping off to sleep.
It is recommended then to have an hour between meditation and sleep so those two activities stay separated form one another.
