7 Signs You’re Still in Love with Your Ex

Hey Optimist Minds!

Sometimes, a broken heart is just as painful as a broken bone, if not more.  The intense emotional stress or pain one feels at experiencing great and deep longing can be overwhelming.

It takes time to get over it. The deeper the love, the longer it takes. Some people move on after a few weeks, months, years… and some people don’t move on at all because they’re still in love.

You might struggle to get on with your life if you’re still in love with someone you’re no longer with. So it’s important to acknowledge this situation if you find yourself in it.

This video will describe seven signs you’re still in love with your ex. Recognising it is the first step towards doing something about it. We recommend consulting a mental health professional for guidance on how to deal with it.

Now, let’s begin.

They’re the first and last thing you think about in your day.

Do you wake up thinking about your ex? Do you even dream about them in your sleep?

When you’re strongly attached to someone, thoughts about them keep racing in your mind. It’s possible that since the breakup, you haven’t even spoken to each other on the phone. Nevertheless, your keep picturing them or thinking about them all the time. You start and end your day missing them.

You spend a lot of time reliving the memories.

If you’re still in love with your previous partner, it’s likely that you can’t get through the day without remembering the time you spent with them at least once.

The memories may be good ones or bad ones, it doesn’t matter. Random objects and situations in your present life take you back to a moment you shared with them.

You check their social media accounts daily.

Back in the day, if you missed an ex, the most you could do was ask about them to mutual acquaintances. Deliberately running into them or showing up at their favourite places would be creepy and considered stalking.

But in today’s world, there’s so much you can find out about your ex’s present life from the internet. If you’re still in love, you’re bound to be curious about what they’re up to. As a result, you’ll spend hours stalking them online.

Seeing other couples reminds you of them.

When you look at others in love, whether it’s in real life or the movies, does your mind go straight to your ex? Do you start picturing all the times the two of you expressed affection?

This is a big sign that you’re still not over your love. It could be that you’re in love with a memory and not the actual person your ex is today. Regardless, you’re still in love and haven’t been able to move on.

You’re not able to be productive enough because you miss them.

If you’ve been doing any of the things we’ve mentioned so far, missing your ex probably takes up most of your time and energy. Consequently, you don’t have enough resources left over for the work you want to be doing.

You might struggle to meet your deadlines, stop participating in activities that used to interest you or spend large portions of the day fixated on them. This decrease in functionality comes from intense and unrequited love.

You can’t picture a future without them yet.

Has your breakup left your life unsettled and chaotic? Are you confused about what to do with the rest of your life?

Maybe you were so madly in love with your ex that you had planned an entire life with them. Getting married, buying a home, having kids… these could have been your major life goals with your partner that are now left hanging because the relationship ended.

If it’s been quite a while and you still can’t see a future without them, you’re likely to be still in love.

You haven’t been happy since the breakup.

The most obvious sign that you haven’t moved on is if you’re persistently unhappy. Ever since your ex left your life, you haven’t been able to feel joy. You might smile or laugh for a little while, but before long, you’re back to feeling gloomy, depressed, or angry.

Did any of these signs seem familiar to you? Do you think you or someone you know is still in love with an ex? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.
