The book

Thirteen Reasons Why,  is a contemporary YA (Young Adult) novel by Jay Asher. 

Plot: Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch.

Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker––his classmate and crush––who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

Hannah’s voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them.

If he listens, he’ll find out why. 

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide.

He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

The show

13 Reasons Why is an American Netflix series based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and adapted by Brian Yorkey for Netflix. Diana Son and Brian Yorkey are co-showrunners on the series.  

Originally conceived as a film set to be released by Universal Pictures with Selena Gomez in the lead role, the adaptation was picked up as a television series by Netflix in late 2015. Gomez served as an executive producer.

The series premiered on March 31, 2017, attracting 6.08 million U.S. viewers in the first three days; and its second season released on May 18, 2018, (Although the second season is not related to the original book, unlike the first season).

 In 2018, 13 Reasons Why was the most watched Netflix show^. The series was renewed on June 6, 2018, for a third season, which premiered on August 23, 2019.

On August 1, 2019, 13 Reasons Why was renewed for a fourth and final season.

The series received universal acclaim from critics and audiences, who praised its subject matter and casting.

While this challenging story can help families start useful conversations about issues like bullying, sexual assault, and depression, the way these issues are addressed go against the advice of many mental health experts and may be confusing for some viewers, especially younger ones. 

To this end, Netflix has added trigger warnings to episodes that contain especially graphic or disturbing content, as well as brief videos with cast members stating that kids already at risk for depression and other mental health issues may not want to watch the show.

-I think this quote is interesting because hannah always speaks about how unhappy she was, how she disiked some people, etc. but it took her journeys through neighborhoods, walks through alleys and hidden routes in order for her to truly see that she hated this town. I wonder why it took her that long. I know a big factor that contributed and essentially led her to her suicide was because of the people at her school.. However, I thought she’d find comfort in the town itself because she grew up there and spoke fondly of it.. It’s surprising to find out she was actually sick of the town.”
